About the Trip Leader

Erik Lukas is an active diver and photographer based in Los Angeles, CA. He is a volunteer scuba diver at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA. You can expect to find Erik diving many of the amazing Pacific Ocean sites of Southern California, camera in hand, at any chance he can get.

First Dive: It wasn’t a dive, but rather a swim with a mask and snorkel with his father. At the age of 10 Erik’s family visited the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, where he swam with a pair of Giant Spotted Eagle Rays, both of which had 10 foot wingspans, and it made quite the impact on him. He later did a Discover Scuba dive, also in the Bahamas…it didn’t go so well…the tank they gave him was empty so his dive lasted all of about 3 minutes. It is believed that he may have been the youngest diver to ever execute a CESA with no prior training.

Best Time in the Water: Photographing humpback whales in French Polynesia certainly ranks high on the list. The pygmy seahorse in Bali is way up on there. His first sighting of a juvenile frogfish. Seeing a whale shark for the first time. Picking just one moment is nearly impossible…aren’t they all good?

Current camera systems: Erik shoots with a Canon 5D Mark III in a Sea & Sea housing using Zen 100mm and 230mm dome ports. The lenses he uses are the Canon 8-15mm f/4L, Canon 16-35mm f/4L and Canon 100mm f/2.8L.
