Socorro Itinerary Overview

Socorro Island is part of the Revillagigedos, a group of small islands off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. Dive sites include Socorro, San Benedicto & Roca Partida but may change due to ocean conditions. Manta's behavior here is unique in the world. The 12-to-16-foot giant mantas of Socorro seek out intimate interactions with divers. They communicate with us, from locking eyes in a first contact to gently swimming just overhead to be tickled by bubbles. Sometimes they hover alongside or underneath a diver, where they often stay, curious and seemingly in want of a connection that has left more than one diver with tears of joy.

It’s one of the reasons we stay committed to the Socorro Islands (a.k.a. the Revillagigedo Archipelago), well worth the full-day motor south from Cabo San Lucas. Volcanic in origin, these islands serve as an oasis amid the Sea of Cortez, 250 miles off the Baja Peninsula coast. The raw lava flows and active volcanoes in these islands resemble the lost world of “Jurassic Park,” which seems fitting as these outpost islands, including

Roca Partida, beckon not just to giant mantas but to a host of big animals.

Your journey will include four dives per day (subject to weather and unforeseeable circumstances)—each an opportunity to encounter resident pods of playful dolphins. You may also see up to 10 varieties of shark: schooling scalloped hammerheads, solitary giant hammerheads, Galápagos, whitetip reef, silver-tip, silky, tiger and oceanic whitetips. The list also includes whale sharks and dusky sharks and on occasion even a thresher shark.

On most days, we enjoy visibility of 70 to 100 feet. When the current picks up, the ash from these volcanic isles can rise, reducing the visibility to 30 feet. For the wide-angle experience that is big-animal diving, this isn’t ideal. But, we’re still cruising one of the most pristine underwater environments—so we then choose dives where we’re closer to the reefs and marine life such as eels, octopuses and Socorro lobsters.

We loved our time on the Nautilus around the Socorro Islands. It was a trip of a lifetime for us. Wonderful team, amazing dives and we were well looked after in between each dive. The destination is very remote so you feel I like you are on a real adventure.

I went on the Nautilus Under Sea to Guadalupe Island on a 5-day trip to dive with the white sharks and it was an amazing trip! The Nautilus crew were super friendly and professional and were all about safety, making for a really enjoyable trip! The food on board was great and you never went hungry, they did nice interpretive presentations about the sharks in the evenings and were very passionate about shark conservation, which was nice. The rooms were clean and comfy, with nice clean bathrooms and good beds so you slept well on the trip. They have two underwater cages and one surface cage and they rotate you around so you can pretty much be in the water in one of the cages at all times if you wanted to, giving you ample opportunity to see the sharks and get some great pictures! They would yell out "shark!" every time a shark came by which was pretty fun and got everyone pumped! You are pretty much guaranteed to see sharks every day, there wasn't really even an hour that went by when there wasn't at least one shark circling the boat. It's a really cool trip to go on, definitely should be on your bucket list and these guys are the real deal, very professional, highly recommend!

Amazing trip to the Revillagigedo Islands! Staff aboard the Nautilus Under Sea was amazing, as usual. Great food and experience on the boat. Occasional rough seas did not stop them from taking great care of the guests and their camera gear while diving. We saw an amazing diversity of marine life - the whale shark, many other shark species (galapagos, silky, silvertip, white tip, a tiger, etc), dolphins, and of course the beautiful mantas!

I also really enjoyed the marine life lectures in the evenings. It was my second trip with Nautilus liveaboards (went to Guadalupe in 2015 aboard the Explorer) and I would definitely return to do a third. Bluewater's photo guide, Erik Lukas, was fabulous also. He took a lot of time to help the guests, regardless of experience or whether they had larger mirrorless/DSLR rigs or people with smaller point and shoot setups. His nightly lectures and photo review sessions were really informative. I felt like I had a decent amount of experience going in, but it was great to learn a ton of new things from a true professional! As always, the staff at Bluewater Travel was very helpful in making arrangements for the trip and answering the many questions we had beforehand. Thanks again for a great trip!
