Trip Overview

Experience what very few people have - a journey where there are no roads, very few people, and almost no boats. At night you hear something splashing. It could be anything - dolphins, marlin, a school of bonitos? Then you hear a huge sound of blowing and water spouting. It's a whale! You can't see him, but he sounds big. At a distance, you hear sea lions and pelicans. What a splendid way to end a magnificent day.

Rocio Del Mar Rocio Del Mar

There will be a maximum of 20 divers on the trip, including the trip leader. During the day we move from one island to the next, diving 3 to 4 times daily. If you wish to hike the remote islands during surface intervals, there is always a dinghy available to take you to shore. Kayaks are also always available for a serene cruise around the islands.

Exploring one island to the next is a magical experience - one that will linger in your memory for years to come. The Sea of Cortez remains a secret oasis where the desert meets the sea.

Read the exciting report from our previous Explore Baja trip.

The biodiversity between the Northern and Southern Sea of Cortez is incredible. The sea life we witness on the surface from the boat, dinghies ,or snorkeling is fantastic. There's potential to see dolphins, sea lions, pilot, humpback, blue, fin, sei, orca, and sperm whales. Also, flying mantas, blue and brown-footed boobies, cormorants, frigate birds, and the endemic yellow-footed gull.

Average water temperatures in October are in the low to mid-80s. A full 3mm wetsuit is recommended. Although the conditions in the Sea of Cortez are mostly calm, there are times that the sea is rough. Please be prepared for this type of situation and bring seasickness medication if necessary.

Here's a sample day-by-day itinerary of this trip:

  • Day 1 - Check in at boat at 5:00pm - San Jose del Cabo (October 3)
  • Day 2 - Cabo Pulmo
  • Day 3 - Isla Cerralvo
  • Day 4 - El Bajo, shipwreck (Fang Ming), visit La Paz for the afternoon

Craig Dietrich is an award-winning underwater photographer based in Jupiter, Florida. From an early age Craig felt the need to express himself artistically and the first time he picked up a camera, he knew he had found the perfect outlet for his creativity and sparked what would become a life-altering passion for photography. Craig served our country as a Naval photographer during both Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, when he was given the opportunity to travel the world and his thirst for adventure was born.

After the Navy, Craig learned to scuba dive. Upon breaking the surface the first time, he knew this was a world he wanted to be a part of and a second passion was ignited. Longing to share that world with others, he put together his two greatest loves and ventured into the world underwater photography.

Craig’s underwater photography has been featured in multiple dive publications, won multiple awards and has been sold in upscale galleries from Carmel, California to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He now makes his living teaching underwater photography and selling his photography at art shows throughout the southeastern United States.

Updated March 10, 2020

The health and safety of our guests and crew are paramount at Rocio del Mar and Quino el Guardian Liveaboards. While we have always had procedures in place to provide a clean and sanitary experience, we know that additional steps must be taken during this time and communicated with our guests. In addition, we are closely monitoring travel and cleaning recommendations by the World Health Organization as well as staying in contact with other dive and travel agencies and practices.

Our guests come to us from all over the world and we are committed to providing the best experience possible. We want to assure our guests that we are doing our utmost to protect the health of them and our crew. This includes but not limited to:

  • All guest rooms and public areas are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized between trips.
  • Handrails, doorknobs, and hallway walls are cleaned and sanitized a minimum of twice a day.
  • The salon, galley, and outside lounge area are sanitized twice daily.
  • Hand sanitizer is available in all public areas and in each guest room. All guests and crew are required to use this before entering the galley for meals.
  • Clorox wipes are in all guest rooms and on the camera table.
  • Disinfectant is available for our guests to use on their masks and regulators. There are no communal rinse tanks for masks.
  • Disinfectant is added to all neoprene rinse tanks.
  • Tissues are available throughout the boat along with receptacles for used tissues. These are emptied throughout the day.
  • Should you arrive at the boat with a cough, fever, or flu-like symptoms, you may be denied boarding for the health and safety of the other passengers and crew.
