Red Sea Dive Overview

  • Wrecks, abundant reef fish life, multiple macro critters, dolphins and awesome coral gardens.

Itinerary Overview

The new RED SEA AGGRESSOR II offers guests a 7-night itinerary diving the best of the north to Ras Mohamed and the Straits of Tiran. The Northern Red Sea and Straits of Tiran provide some of the most historic wrecks like the Thistlegorm, Rosalie Moller, and Abu Nuhas. Ras Mohamed National Park is full of pristine coral reefs as well as abundant marine life. The Straits of Tiran are the narrow sea passages between the Sinai and Arabian peninsulas which separates the Gulf of Aqaba from the Red Sea. These reefs, named after British cartographers (Jackson, Woodhouse, Thomas, Gordon), are world famous for their extraordinary diversity of corals and pelagics.

  • All charters are Saturday to Saturday
  • Saturday: Boarding 3 - 6 pm
  • Sunday: Port Authority clearance and departure 6 am. Eat, sleep and dive all day. First dive site is one hour away.
  • Monday - Thursday: Eat, Sleep & Dive
  • Friday: Two dives then return to Hurghada between 2 - 4 pm, Cocktail part 6 pm and dinner ashore at 7 pm. (Friday dinner is the only meal not included in the cruise)

The Red Sea Aggressor II does the northern Red Sea itinerary which is great for wreck diving enthusiasts. The boat itself isn’t new, but it is well maintained and we did not envy other boats that were anchored next to us. Everything worked exceptionally well on the boat and no one encountered any issues on the boat.
There is no camera room, but there are two camera tables on the dive deck and lots of cubby holes for photographers to put their electronics in. There are lots of electrical outlets all over the boat for charging as well.
The best thing about this boat is the crew. They really made the trip for us. The cruise director is one of the best that I have encountered (I’ve done over 20 liveaboards) and he makes the trip really fun for everyone, including his crew. The guests and the crew were all having fun during the week. It is. It only really fun, but there is also a strong focus on safety. The dive crew are all very experienced divers in the Red Sea and excellent at what they do.
We also have the flexibility to dive with the divemaster or buddy up and go do our own dives. The dive briefings are very detailed so it gave us a lot of confidence to separate from the group and go off on our own to explore. For divers who prefer to dive with the divemaster, the groups are smaller because some divers would rather plan and do their own dive. Everyone wins!
Overall the crew really made the trip for us and we had a really good time on the boat. Highly recommend!

Red Sea Aggressor II Trip Review

Area visited:
Ras Mohamed & Straits of Tiran. Wrecks including SS Thistlegorm, and Dunraven.

Date visited:
June 3-11, 2022

My background (before trip):
- US Resident
- Age: 60
- 42 dives
- First liveaboard
- First time international travel besides Mexico and Canada
- Get cold relatively easily.
- AOWD

Accommodations:
While I lucked out and got my own cabin, the available space seemed adequate for
two adults. The cabins were comfortable and clean.
I prefer a firm mattress so for me the bed was perfect.
Each cabin also had an A/C unit which was a nice comfort.
Outside of the cabins, the common areas were clean and enjoyable to hang out in,
with most of them shaded or enclosed.

Worth noting was that the captain moored the boat in sheltered areas in the
evenings, which made sleeping easy.

Food:
In short, the food was great. The chefs did a great job providing varied meals
with numerous choices. They really take pride and enjoyment in
creating the great food and presenting it in an appealing manner.
I'm vegetarian and felt that the creations I was served exceeded or at least
equalled everyone else's fare.

One of the chefs is a pastry chef, much to my delight. We got lucky and two
people had birthdays, so we had birthday cake on two nights. One of the cakes
was in the shape of a dolphin which was delightful.

In addition to the food, there was free soda pop & beer as well as tea & coffee.

Diving:
Briefing
Before each dive we had a detailed briefing, covering the dive "goal", route
taken, animals to look for, and history if a wreck.
Reefs
The reefs appeared healthy with lots of life. I really enjoyed the anthias
and chromis fish that hung out over the coral heads.
Wrecks
I found the wrecks quite interesting and enjoyed the abundance of life around
them. I missed some of the highlights of the wrecks because I was focused on
buoyancy and trying to avoid crashing into the wreck. A good training
exercise would be to swim through hoops in a pool before going on this trip.
Some spots in the wrecks were a little snug. If you are claustrophobic, you
can often remain on the outside of the wreck.
Night diving
With the exception of the first and last day, each day ended with a night
dive. I found that brighter isn't always better when it comes to dive
lights. Many of the creatures did their best to flee the bright lights and a
dimmer light wasn't so repulsive to them. Some of the sights I found more
interesting was watching the schools of fish swimming around the boats,
attracted by the lights.

BWDT Staff:
I enjoyed working with my Bluewater Dive Travel agent, Jaime Smith. As this trip
was entirely new to me, it was very nice to have someone to talk to and get a
good idea of what to expect.

Aggressor Staff:
The staff of the Red Sea Aggressor II were great. I found them super helpful,
friendly, and approachable. Being new to the whole liveaboard situation and the
quick tempo from briefing to splash, it was great to have the reminder to bring
my camera for example.

I appreciated the assistance with food choices as well. In some cases it was not
apparent which options were meatless, and the staff was helpful in this regard.

The staff/crew of the boat was also very hard working. I was quite impressed
with their level of effort throughout the trip. I was pretty wrung out by the
end of the trip and for them it was just another week in a busy year.

Recommendations:
While the seas were very calm, if you get motion sick, why chance it? I took my
dramamine (Meclizine) once/day and had zero trouble, even bobbing on the surface.

Bring a hood for diving. I always wear a hat outside, so my hairless head got a
bit burned in just the 15-25 min. in the zodiac. From then on I wore a hood.

Adequate wetsuit. I wore a 7 mm wetsuit and found myself getting cold by the end
of the dives. Initially, I debated whether the 7mm would be too much, but it was
just right. I think I could have used a thicker hood even.

Ear drops or alcohol in dropper to dry them. This was a somewhat unpleasant slow
surprise. By the end of the week, my ears had gotten sore. It didn't affect
equalization, but made putting on and taking off my hood somewhat uncomfortable.
I used some ear drops that were available for everyone to use and the problem
started to abate. On shore I put a few drops of alcohol in each ear and the
problem completely cleared up in a couple days. Strange.

This trip is right for you if:
Your buoyancy is not out of control
You like wrecks
You like reefs

Red Sea Aggressor Trip Report

Week 1: we did the deep south route (going all the way to St John's Reef)
Week 2: we did the northern route to Brothers and Daedalus reefs

Travel:
I chose to fly to Hurghada instead of Marsa Alam as there are a lot more flight options. I chose Turkish Airlines because there was only one connection in Istanbul (only one chance for my baggages to get lost). Although the connection was long, I ended up going to a lounge and it was not that bad at all. I highly recommend doing that - either you get in for free with an Amex card or you can pay $25 which is totally worth it.
I stay at the Hilton in Hurghada after landing and had a driver pick up me after lunch to drive me down to Port Ghalib. It was about a 2h30hr drive.

The Diving:
I preferred the southern route to the northern one but overall the diving was really nice. We unfortunately did not see any hammerheads but did see: other sharks, manta rays, a ton of blue spotted rays, octopus, turtles and a gzillion other fish. The reefs are in overall good condition and none of the dive sites were too crowded.

The Southern route we did 4-5 dives a day and the Northern route was 4 dives a day with no night dives.

Note - in late March early April, the water temps are not that warm, especially if you are doing 3-4-5 dives a day. In the south, the temps ranged from 75-78 and in the north from 73-75.

The boat and crew:
The boat we were on was very comfortable though, and the shared rooms well designed with beds side by side versus bunk beds. The showers actually had water pressure which was great for liveaboards.

A few things I'd recommend when going:
1. if you need a driver from Hurghada to Marsa Alam, I highly recommend Mohamed:

2. bring spares!! batteries for camera/computer/lights and spare o-rings

3. if you fly into Hurghada and need a hotel the Hilton by the airport is cheap and ok for 1 night, if you plan to spend the day or a few days there then stay at the Steingenberger Al Dau.
If you need a hotel in Port Ghalib the Intercontinental and Crown Hotel are on a gorgeous shared property and walking distance to the docks.

4. be sure to bring appropriate wetuits, 78ºF sounds warm unless you are diving all day and hoods/hooded vests make a huge difference

5. bring a few snacks like nuts, or granola bars for nibbles between meals. The boat certainly feeds you but sometimes between meals a little bite to eat makes a big difference.
