While staying in Playa del Carmen, we drove to Akumal so my non-diving companions could hang at the beach of this beautiful bay and snorkel with the many sea turtles here. The beach is beautiful and there are many large turtles in shallow water, easily seen while snorkeling. Akumal Dive Center is located directly on the beach here. They offer local ocean diving and also cenote diving. I signed up for a day of cenote diving and dove at Angelita and Gran Cenote. Their operation is very professional and the guide superb. This is a great shop and a great place for non-divers

I've been diving in Cozumel at least a dozen times. The last several times there, I used Aldora Divers. They cater to experienced divers. They use 100cf steel tanks for long bottom times and all dives are computer dives. They visit the best southern sites, such as Maricaibo, Punta Sur, and the famous Devil’s Throat. They also visit the world renowned Palancar Reef dive sites. For advanced divers, they will dive the little-explored east side of the island on pristine reefs. Highly recommended and will use them again.

Asia Divers is the on-site dive operator at the El Galleon Beach Hotel in Puerto Galera. They offer 4 dives each day and some night dives. The dive sites are close enough to return to the resort after each dive. Most are fairly shallow and easily diveable, but we did experience some current. The crew and divemasters were awesome. Safety is a top priority. They offer training and have a good supply of rental equipment. They also have a nice gift shop. I would return again. Highly recommended.

Atlantis Dive Resort, Puerto Galera

I traveled to the Philippines in April of 2022, shortly after the country was reopened to tourists. I wanted to dive in Puerto Galera again, and chose the Atlantis Resort as my temporary home-away-from-home. In the past, I had taken a bus from Manila to Batangas on the coast, then a ferry to Puerto Galera. Because the bus & ferry schedules were so erratic, I requested the resort arrange my transfers. This consisted of a private driver in an air-conditioned van, 1st class ferry ticket, and tuktuk ride to the resort. Everything went like clockwork. The resort is set on a hillside, carved out of the jungle, at the ocean’s edge. I was on an all-inclusive plan with accommodations, diving, and food included.

Everything at this resort is top notch. The rooms are large and spacious with bathroom and shower. All have A/C and ceiling fan, as well as a mini bar that can be used a a refrigerator. My room had plenty of outlets for easy charging of electronics.

There is a large restaurant with an extensive menu and the chefs prepare about 6 specials each day. The food was excellent and the portions were large. The meal plan includes 3 courses at dinner and I found it hard to finish all 3. I never had a complaint with the food or the service.

The dive shop, locker room, tank storage, and dive-prep area are all at water-side. The dive crew will set up your gear and take it to and from the boat. They take a maximum of 6 divers per boat, and we were diving most times with 5 and a couple of times with only 4 divers. Because the dive sites are such a short ride, your dive briefing is at the resort, you suit up, board the boat, and go diving. The boat returns to the resort after every dive where the resort staff is waiting with hot soup, coffee, tea, beverages, snacks, and sweets. If you're diving nitrox, you select a pre-filled tank, analyze and check pressure yourself, mark tank with tape, and the crew will do the rest. After a short surface interval, it all happens again. They offer 4 dives per day plus a night dive. The local reefs are covered with beautiful hard and soft corals. Nudibranchs are everywhere you look, sometimes several different species on one rock. You can also expect to see octopuses, mantis shrimp, lots of crustaceans, and the typical reef fish found in the Coral Triangle. Puerto Galera is a photographer’s dream. The dive guides are very experienced at finding the best critters. The dives are generally no more than 50 feet, so 60 minute dives are normal.

Atlantis also does a day trip to Verde Island. This is an all day trip including 3 dives. The dives at Verde Island tend to be deeper, with more current, hence, more pelagics. This is vertical wall diving at it's best. There is a famous “Washing Machine" dive here as well.

The service from the staff at the resort is impeccable. Starting at check-in, every staff member greeted me and addressed me by name each time they saw me. Everyone has a wide, genuine smile. The staff would rate 5 stars anyway, but after 5 days of diving and making a total of 19 dives, I contracted covid-19. I was required to quarantine in my room until I tested negative, before returning home. The staff really upped their game and attended to my every need. Food and all other necessities were delivered to my room several times each day. Ten stars are not enough for the friendly and attentive staff here.
My return transfers, again arranged by the Resort, went flawlessly.

The only small negative about this resort is they have no elevator. If your room is on the upper levels, you may have to navigate a lot of stairs up and down each time you go to or from your room. I was on one of the upper levels, but the stairs were not an issue for me.
I would definitely return to Atlantis Puerto Galera and have recommended it to friends.

Belize

I have traveled to Belize twice. The first time was to Ambergris Caye. The trip required a short flight from the international gateway of Belize City to San Pedro, the main town, where you can find many great restaurants, shops, bars, and dive operators. We stayed in a private villa, toward the south end of the island, that was oceanfront and had a 100 foot dock. The dive operator I used picked me up here every morning. Accommodations include rental houses, hotels, and resort. We traveled here with several non-divers and they enjoyed themselves very much. Travel around the island is basically by golf cart. See if you can watch the feeding of the saltwater crocodile toward the south end and join in at the “Chicken Drop" in town. I did local diving in Belize around Ambergris Caye and also long range boat diving to the Great Blue Hole and Lighthouse Reef. The Great Blue Hole is a fascinating bucket list dive. See stalactites and sharks, and prepare for a dive to about 130 feet. The dives at Lighthouse Reef were on spectacular, pristine reefs. This was my favorite area to scuba dive.
My second trip was to St. George’s Caye, a small private island accessed by a short boat ride from Belize City. The island has one resort that is all inclusive. This is truely an island getaway destination. We did local diving and trips to Turneffe Atoll. Other guests were non divers and some honeymooners and they said they were very pleased with their stay.
Overall, I found the scuba diving in Belize to be excellent, the food delicious, the people very friendly, and the culture to be diverse and interesting. When you visit, be sure to taste and take home some of my favorite hot sauce, Belize's famous Marie Sharp's Hot Sauce.

Belmar Oceanfront Apartments Bonaire

I have been to Bonaire several times, but recently stayed at the Belmar Oceanfront Apartments for the first time. I chose it because their on-site valet boat diving service was just what I was looking for. Shore diving was not an option for me this trip. This is a small resort with a mix of 21 one, two, and three bedroom apartments. The on-site dive shop and dive boat are operated by Buddy Dive Bonaire. Everything in the resort guide is described perfectly.
We had a 1 bedroom that was extremely spacious, with a full, well equipped kitchen and bathroom. Our balcony overlooked the gorgeous saltwater pool and had a 180 degree ocean view (see photo). The living room is large and comfortable with a flat screen TV.
The dive boat picks up at the dock right in front of the resort. It is configured for a maximum of 8 divers. Some days we were diving with only 6. Dive gear is stored in a locker room just behind the dive shop. Even though “valet service" is provided, it is still each diver's responsibility to bring gear to the boat and back, and rinse and hang to dry. The crew will load gear onto the boat, set up on your tank, assist in analyzing your tank if using nitrox, switch tanks after first dive, and unload gear from the boat on arrival back at the dock. The dive guides were very knowledgeable and did a great job at finding frogfish for us. Five out of six days, we dove Klein Bonaire, only accessible by boat. This is great for people wanting to make afternoon shore dives on Bonaire. No need to worry about repeating dive sites. One day, we dove sites on Bonaire due to winds at Klein causing chop, but these sites are just as good.
The resort doesn't have a restaurant. Our package included a rental car, so it was very easy to drive to one of the many great restaurants available on the island. The car also came in handy to drive around the island for sightseeing.
We will definitely return to the Belmar Oceanfront Apartments for the laid back, easy atmosphere and the great boat diving. We visited a couple of other resorts to eat, and realized how busy they were with dive groups and other visitors. So glad we chose Belmar! Highly recommended.

The Best Scuba Diving in Costa Rica

We have a friend who owns a vacation home in Costa Rica and he offered to let us use it. The house is located in Tamarindo near the beach. We chose a week in January and went as a group of six. Three of us are scuba divers and the other three are non-divers. It was intended as an adventure trip to do some exploring around the country and squeeze in some diving when possible. We flew to Liberia, rented an SUV, and drove to Tamarindo, which we used as our base.

The next day, we made a 1 hour drive to Playas del Coco and found a dive shop right on the main street to take us out on their boat. They suggested the Catalina Islands because there was a good chance to see Giant Pacific mantas. We were the only ones on the boat and after about a 1 hour ride, we hit the water in search of our elusive quarry. About 10 minutes into the dive, we had our first sighting, a 15 footer that snuck up from behind and passed us within near touching distance. What a thrill to have such a close encounter! Throughout the rest of the dive, we saw several more giants coming, going, and circling around us in very near proximity. It was a shame our exhilarating dive had to end. When we got to the surface, we couldn't contain our excitement. Once we were back on the boat, our divemaster told us that after the surface interval, we would move to a site with a cleaning station, in hopes that we would see more mantas up close and personal. We weren't disappointed. We settled in behind a rock outcropping and waited, hoping a manta would show up. It didn't take long. An 18 footer swam up to within a few feet of us and hovered in place while being tended to by several fish picking bits off the manta. After several minutes, it moved on but it wasn't long before another showed up. It was a repeat of the same show. In all, we saw three different mantas come to the cleaning station during the dive. It was truly a day to remember and we had a lot to talk about during the hour boat ride back to Playas del Coco and the hour drive back to Tamarindo. We decided it was worth the drive to return the next day.

When we returned to the shop, it was decided that we would dive in the Golfo de Papagayo whose sites are much closer and only about a 20-minute boat ride. We went to a site called Meros, a small pinnacle. The visibility here wasn't as good as the previous day, but we were rewarded with schools of grunts, moray eels, some nudibranchs, and some large groupers. The second dive was a site called Monkey's Head, a large rock that resembles the head of a gorilla. It was mostly typical marine life seen in the area, but we did see a squadron of spotted eagle rays. That definitely made this dive a winner. We only dove 2 days but would like to return to dive the Bat Islands for a chance to see bull sharks.

The rest of our trip was devoted to topside activities. We set off for the town of La Fortuna. This isn't a day trip so we stayed at a great hotel just outside of town. From here we were easily able to visit La Fortuna Waterfall for a good part of the day and a wonderful thermal resort on a day pass to enjoy their incredible hot springs. This was all in the shadow of Arenal Volcano. We continued to Monteverde National Park to hike in the cloud forest, cross hanging bridges, listen to howler monkeys in the trees, and zip line over the jungle canopy.

We returned to our base in Tamarindo where we relaxed on the beach and one of our friends spent the day surfing. The last thing we did was a night tour to Marino las Baulas National Park, which is a leatherback turtle nesting area. It is required that you be guided by a park ranger for the safety of the turtles and their nests. It is definitely worth the visit to see these majestic turtles on the beach.

Bottom line: Costa Rica is a real nature lover's delight. The diving was really great and way better than we thought it would be, the topside activities are fantastic, the food is delicious, and the people are warm and welcoming.

Bohio Dive Resort

I had been diving in the Turks & Caicos Islands, based in Providenciales, several times but wanted to try Grand Turk. We stayed at Bohio Dive Resort. Our dive package included accommodations, diving, breakfast, and lunch every day. The resort only has 16 rooms, so it's never crowded. We stayed in a beachfront standard king room. It has a wonderful ocean/beach view from your private balcony. The room is furnished with a king-size bed, TV, mini-refrigerator, A/C, and ceiling fan. Beach towels are also provided. The room was adequate and kept clean with daily maid service, but we thought a little renovation was in order. The resort is located on Pillory Beach, a beautiful white sand expanse with lounge chairs and beach umbrellas. There's also a pool. The grounds are kept immaculate and the lobby and restaurant areas are beautiful. They have a small gift shop and offer spa services in your room from an outside vendor.

Breakfast and lunch (included in our package) are served on the outdoor patio next to the beach. You place your lunch order before leaving for the morning dives so they can have it ready for you shortly after returning to the resort. We ate dinner at the onsite restaurant every night. Jorika, the executive chef, changes the menu daily and prepares many cuisines, including Greek, Indian, Thai, Italian, and Spanish. They also offer a Saturday night barbecue, with reggae music, on the outdoor patio and Sunday brunch. We found all the food delicious, although somewhat pricey.

Diving is provided by the onsite dive operation, which was very professional and dedicated to giving scuba divers the best dives available. We did a lot of wall diving with swim throughs, canyons, and coral arches. There's an abundance of corals (including black coral at easily diveable depths) and plenty of marine animals, including friendly groupers. The boat picks you up right on the beach in front of the dive resort.

Bottom line: This is a beautiful beachfront dive resort with great amenities and world class diving. Two small negatives were that some cruise passengers came to Pillory Beach for a day trip and local children came to swim at the resort pool, sometimes monopolizing the deck and pool. These were not big problems for us and we never complained to management.

Bonaire Diving

I have traveled to Bonaire twice. Once I stayed in a private villa and did one day of boat diving and 6 days of shore diving. We used a dive operator that has several locations around the island for exchanging tanks. We had a rental pickup truck and drove from one dive site to the next. The dive sites in Bonaire are marked by yellow rocks next to the roadside. It was easy to make 4 dives a day and a night dive.

The second time, I stayed at a dive resort and did mostly boat diving, with a couple of shore dives . These dives were at Bonaire and Klein Bonaire. Three dives a day and a couple of night dives in front of the resort. Bonaire is famous for large baitballs and we also saw frogfish, seahorses, and all the usual critters.

Many dive operators and dive resorts are available to choose from. There are also plenty of hotels, condos, and private villas for rent. Kralendijk is the main town and capital. This is where you’ll find the majority of shops and restaurants, including our favorite, a Mediterranean one serving delicious food. The town can be very crowded if a cruise ship is in port.

On non-diving days, a visit to Washington Slagbaai National Park is an interesting diversion if you have a sturdy vehicle. The windward side of the island also draws windsurfers from all over. The population is mostly locals and Dutch expats. Everyone was super friendly and the island seemed to be really safe. Be sure to pick up some salt produced here. It’s very good and does taste different than ordinary salt. We will be glad to return at any time.

Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort

After diving in the Cabo San Lucas area, we made our way to Cabo Pulmo to stay and dive with the Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort. We had a rental car and the drive was very pleasant . The last six miles is on a somewhat rough dirt road. The resort is located right on the beach with bungalows and casitas scattered aground the property. Our casita was a very large (about 600 square feet) “studio” type accommodation with a full kitchen, living area, dining area, queen bed, indoor bathroom, and a great outdoor shower. It also has an upstairs covered deck with a table and chairs. There is a partial ocean view. We elected to take advantage of the “Eat, Sleep, Dive” plan which is all inclusive. Cabo Pulmo is very small (population 114) and there are a few other restaurants in town, but eating at the resort for all of our meals was very convenient. The resort restaurant serves an international menu with large portions and we thought the food and service were excellent. There is a swimming pool on the property used for scuba training but guests are free to use it throughout the day.
The on-site dive shop is operated by a very experienced staff and runs like a well oiled machine. Boats can't moor in the marine reserve, so the crews must launch the dive boats from the beach. It's an awe inspiring operation. Diving is very easy, mostly shallow reefs or wrecks covered with massive schools of fish, large grouper, and bull sharks, to name a few of the things to see. The dive guides from CPBR are very professional and act as unofficial guardians of the marine Park. The dive shop has a well-stocked gift shop for t-shirts, hats, and other apparel.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at CPBR and can’t wait to return.
