Dive Information

Malapascua Dive Overview

Malapascua is known for some of the best shark diving in the Philippines, famous for the thresher sharks which can be seen at any time of year at Monad Shoal and Kemod Shoal. This area is reputedly the only place in the world where the thresher shark can be seen within recreational diver limits on a regular basis.

Exotic’s owners Dik and Cora de Boer carried out the first encounters with the thresher sharks in 1997. Later, film crews and dive magazines from all over the world came to visit Malapascua and Exotic just to see this phenomenon.

At other times of the year, it is also possible to encounter schooling hammerheads and giant manta rays that also frequent the cleaning stations at Monad and Kemod Shoal.

Malapascua also has a reputation for first-class macro diving. It is almost guaranteed that you will witness, amongst other things, a plethora of nudibranch, frogfish, mandarin fish, cuttlefish, sea horses, sea moths, octopus, gunards and pipefish while diving.

Typical Dive Schedule

The usual day starts with a 5.00am dive to Monad Shoal or Kemod Shoal to see the thresher sharks.

Yes it’s early but it really is the best time to spot the thresher sharks! The boat gets back at around 8.00am and then they have morning boats leaving at between 8.30am and 10.00am. Some boats go for one dive and are back by lunchtime, others go for a 2-dive trip and are back by 3.00pm to 4.00 pm. They also have one-dive trips in the afternoon, too. Then they have their “dusk dive” which leaves at around 5.00pm – the best time to see mandarin fish as well as other critters such as frogfish and seahorses.

As the largest and most established dive shop on Malapascua, they also offer 3-dive trips or even their dive safaris to remote locations such as Camotes Island and Maripipipi Island, where over the years their dive shop staff have explored and logged the best of these previously un-dived, pristine reefs. These safaris can be pre-arranged or organized a few days in advance at the dive shop.

Malapascua Exotic Island Dive Resort was perfect for our seven night stay diving in the Philippines. We loved the thresher sharks, saw our first tiger shark, and had an outstanding adventure at Gato Island. The local dives have beautiful soft corals and are full of life. The dive shop is extremely organized and professional, took care of our gear for every dive and, since we opted to dive nitro, we had a personal dive guide for most of our visit. The dive boats are extremely comfortable and spacious. The food was tasty and the "full board" menu was quite comprehensive but it would have been nice to have also tried some of the specialities off of their extensive menu. Our room was overlooking the beach with a wrap around balcony that was perfect for our needs. The airport transfer was seamless in both directions from/to Cebu and the hotel understood the time constraints that happen at certain peak hours because of traffic....it took us four hours on the way down and just under three hours on the way back early in the morning. The WIFI was available at central locations. The beach is beautiful and perfect for swimming, the moonrise from our beachside dinner spot was amazing! We had a great time and plan on returning!
