I have travelled on a lot of live aboard dive yachts in the last 15 years, including the Peter Hughes (Aggressor & Dancer fleets) in Indonesia (Komodo), Belize, Turks & Caicos), as well as the Mike Ball boat in Australia, and the Explorer Ventures boats in Saba/St. Maarten/St. Kitts. We dove on the Turks and Caicos Aggressor in November 2009, and honestly, it was our favorite boat of them all.

Travel Coordination:

The Aggressor crew were at the airport, ready to take our bags and whisk us over to the boat, and similarly had shuttles ready to take us back to the airport (very sadly) on our return.

Accommodations / Food:

Rooms on live aboard dive yachts are always a bit tight (bring folding/soft-sided luggage!), but our rooms were very comfortable, with adequate storag efor all of our "stuff". The meals on the yacht were fantastic! As a really nice added bonus, when we came up from our night dives, the crew was waiting for us with hot cocoa. That was such a nice touch!

Diving:

Like any good live aboard, the Aggressor makes the diving easy. Your gear awaits on the back of the boat, and you can just roll into the water -- up to 5 dives a day. That's why liveaboards cost more, but for ease and logging a lot of dives, it is a good deal.

What makes the Turks & Caicos Aggressor really special was the crew, led by Captain Amanda (she is still there at time of this posting, and we plan to go back within the next year). To date, all of my experiences on the Peter Hughes boats have been really positive, but I think Captain Amanda was our favorite – she was great in making us feel so welcome on the boat, and in guiding us to some really nice dive sites

Turks and Caicos is my personal favorite for diving in the Caribbean. The waters are particularly clear, the reefs are lush, there are some really nice walls, and a great variety of both large creatures (sharks, rays, grouper, moray eels, barracuda) and small creatures (nudibranchs, garden eels, Christmas tree worms…you get the idea).

One particularly fun dive by the crew involved the “pyramid of love” – a perforated metal pyramid shaped box (about the size of a breadbox), which is filled with frozen fish, and place on the reef. The crew brings it down on one of the dives, to draw sharks – it never fails. Ordinarily, I object to feeding wild animals, but in this case, it was kind of fun, and it wasn't feeding them from our hands. There were a couple of reef sharks cruising around, drawn by the scent of thawing fish, along with a large moray eel, a grouper (named Gulley, who was well known to the crew), and a little nurse shark. The nurse shark won, he flipped on his back, swam under the pyramid and basically sucked all the fish out. It was quite comical to watch! You have to admire his creativity!

The positives:
The crew was top notch. Amanda runs a tight ship. The chef Kevin provided the best food I've ever had on a liveaboard. Typical Aggressor charter focused on maximizing diving and getting to the best destinations. The T&C walls are amazing, some of the best if not the best in the Caribbean. Shark action on nearly every dive. The most consistent shark action I've seen.

The negatives:
The ship is moored in a shallow harbor, it needs to depart and disembark well before low tide. Thus the ship might not be there when you arrive requiring an inflatable boat transfer from dock to ship. In our case that took an hour in 2-3' seas, everything was wet (luggage, electronics, etc.) and people were seasick. I would highly suggest checking the tide tables and arriving before the mother ship departs.
The toilets are in the shower stalls. So once you use the shower you track water into your cabin when using the toilet. Not a big deal, we just showered on the dive platform after the last dive (or any dive).
The shallow reefs are algae covered, similar to Florida and areas of the Bahamas. Luckily the walls are lush and fantastic, and there still plenty of fish action in the shallows.

Loved the T&C Aggressor II. The boat was excellent, the crew was fantastic, and the food was PHENOMENAL. Chef Kevin made incredible meals every day and did a wonderful job of accommodating my dietary restriction (wheat allergy). The diving was great -- beautiful walls and sharks on every dive. Lots of octopuses, too!

The only negative is how the trip began. There was no one waiting for us at the airport (contrary to the know-before-you-go documentation). We waited over an hour before a driver showed up. We were dropped off...and there was no boat! There was someone in an office nearby (who did not work for Aggressor) who said the boat was out and they'd come back for us in a chase boat; we found out later that the Aggressor had to leave before boarding time due to low tides in the harbor. The chase boat ride was an hour long in choppy seas. We waited for the chase boat to do two more pickups over the next four hours, and we sat rocking in the open waters. I was violently seasick, and others got fairly sick as well.

With all that said, still 4-5 stars. I would like to think the start of my trip was not a typical experience, and the boat/crew/food were great overall. I would recommend confirming boat departure time with the T&C Aggressor II prior to the trip; had we known about the early departure time and the chase boat experience, we would have booked an earlier flight to avoid that.

We were fortunate to be able to dive with the Turks & Caicos Aggressor II twice in 2020, the 10-day trip in September and a 7-day trip in December. The crew is outstanding and the boat is immaculate. We saw lots of sharks, at least one on almost every dive. The marine life is healthy and plentiful. The divemasters are able to point out the tiny things that are often overlooked. Their enthusiasm for the animals is contagious and everyone was trying to find the tiny critters by the end of both trips. The food, especially on the second trip, was excellent, even for vegetarians. Our every whim was catered to and we felt very safe and welcome.
