  • Diving the Turneffe Atoll is legendary with vertical walls just beyond the coral reef in front of the Resort. These dramatic walls extend for miles in both directions giving the diver unlimited opportunity to experience large tube sponges, giant basket sponges, purple sea fans, curious reef fish, huge schools of jewfish, permit, snapper and jack and endless varieties of tropical fish. scuba diving is conducted mainly around the Turneffe Atoll with a side trip on Tuesdays to the famous Blue Hole.
  • Turneffe Atoll is 24 miles long by 8 miles wide, with 210 square miles of area, more than 100 cayes and islets and more than 50 miles of fringing reefs. There are over 70 named dive sites around the atoll, 20 of which are 3 to 35 minutes away from Blackbird’s dock.
  • The dive sites at Blackbird Caye Resort in Belize are considered some of the best in the Western Caribbean which makes it a perfect place to scuba dive. The visibility often ranges from 100 to 150 feet. Turneffe Atoll is the only Caribbean Atoll made up of dozens of mangrove islands which are the juvenile nurseries for coral reefs. We chose Blackbird Caye because of it's remote location in the Turneffe Atoll, overall value, and their transfer schedule worked with our itinerary (travel to the island is on Wednesdays and Saturdays). The resort was only about half full so they upgraded us to a nicer bungalow for free. The bungalows were quite large with a nice sitting area, closet, good sized bathroom, reasonably comfortable beds, a big screened in porch with a hammock, and views of the water.

Food was served buffet style in the restaurant and featured an acceptable assortment of options. Honestly, I don't remember much about the food, which probably means it neither excellent nor horrible.

The diving and dive guides were great. Trips to the Blue Hole are done on Tuesdays but require a minimum of 6 divers. They were very flexible in accommodating the number of dives per day and sites we wanted to visit.

The only problem we encountered had to do with our transfer back to Belize City. The transfer boat broke down on the day we were supposed to leave, but they were able to get a prop plane from Maya Air to escort us. Five stars for customer service!

Blackbird Caye is excellent for those wanting to be close to some of the best dive site of Belize without breaking the bank.

Blackbird Caye Resort is in the most beautiful setting. From the moment you step foot on Turneffe Atoll, you will be mesmerized by the beautiful beaches and the underwater wildlife! The resort is rustic but wonderfully comfortable. The dive guides are excellent, and helped me improve my diving skills while I was there. And we saw such amazing fish and rays!
