Dive resorts in Belize offer an enticing mix of Caribbean reef diving, tropical rainforest, exotic birdlife and historical Mayan ruins. Most diving is land‑based from Ambergris Caye, the atolls and the southern coast, with a few liveaboard options for those who want to stay offshore.
Belize is easy to reach from the United States and Canada, with a good spread of budget, mid‑range and luxury resorts. Many properties combine reef diving with jungle tours, cave tubing, waterfall rappelling, or relaxed “island time” on the beach – which makes Belize ideal if you’re travelling with both divers and non‑divers.
Two of our most popular dive resorts are Blackbird Caye and Turneffe Island Resort, both on private islands directly on the reef.
- Main areas: Ambergris Caye, Turneffe Atoll, Lighthouse Reef / Blue Hole access, and southern Belize (Placencia / Hopkins).
- Best time to dive: generally Nov–May for drier weather and calmer seas; whale shark season off Placencia peaks around Apr–Jun (Gladden Spit).
- Water temperature: usually around 80–84°F (27–29°C) – most divers are comfortable in a 3 mm wetsuit or shorty.
- Dive style: easy boat dives on fringing reef walls, spur‑and‑groove formations, canyons and patch reefs, with occasional drift dives.
- Who it’s for: great for beginners through intermediate divers, snorkelers, and mixed groups who want both reef time and topside adventures.
On our own Belize trips we usually split time between offshore atolls for clear water and healthy walls, and a few days on the mainland or Ambergris Caye to enjoy local restaurants, wildlife and Mayan sites. Many guests tell us this balance is what made Belize feel like a full vacation rather than just a dive week.
Belize Dive Resort Areas
Ambergris Caye
Ambergris Caye offers easy access to many of Belize’s best dive sites along the barrier reef and day trips to Lighthouse Reef and the world‑renowned Blue Hole. It’s also known for its lively bars, restaurants and relaxed island nightlife in San Pedro.
The Blue Hole
This giant marine sinkhole, sometimes known as The Great Blue Hole, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is over 400 ft deep and 1,000 ft wide. Some divers enjoy the Blue Hole for its sheer depth (typical max depth around 130–140 ft / 40–43 m), thermocline and dramatic overhangs with stalactites. Marine life is limited compared to the surrounding reefs, so it’s often combined with two shallow reef dives in the same day.
Half Moon Caye
A small tropical island and protected bird sanctuary, Half Moon Caye is a popular stop for a beach lunch on Blue Hole day trips. Non‑birders can explore the white sand beaches and warm shallow water, and there’s often excellent snorkeling right off the dock.
Turneffe Atoll
Turneffe is widely considered one of the best dive areas in Belize. This large offshore reef system features walls, spur‑and‑groove formations and mangrove shallows. Common sightings include white‑spotted toadfish (endemic to Belize), eagle rays, groupers, nurse sharks, jacks, snappers and healthy coral gardens.
Placencia & Southern Belize
If you want to get away from the crowds, Placencia and nearby Hopkins in southern Belize offer quieter beaches and easy access to wildlife areas and Mayan ruins. At Gladden Spit Marine Reserve, there’s a seasonal chance of seeing whale sharks (typically around late spring), along with excellent reef diving and snorkeling.

Belize Dive Resort FAQs
Is Belize good for beginner divers?
Yes. Many Belize dive sites are shallow fringing reefs with mild to moderate currents, making them suitable for newer divers and rusty certified divers. More advanced dives – such as the Blue Hole or some outer atoll walls – are best for those with good buoyancy control and some recent experience.
What’s the best time of year to dive Belize?
You can dive Belize year‑round. In general, November to May offers drier weather and calmer seas. Whale shark encounters at Gladden Spit typically occur around the full moons of March through June, although sightings are never guaranteed.
Should I stay on Ambergris Caye or an offshore atoll?
Ambergris Caye works well if you want a mix of diving and town life – restaurants, bars and easy access to other activities. Offshore atoll resorts like Turneffe and Lighthouse Reef put you closer to the best walls and clearer water, with a quieter, more all‑inclusive feel. Many guests split their stay between both.
How does Belize compare to other Caribbean dive destinations?
Belize combines healthy reefs and big walls with the second‑largest barrier reef in the world, plus easy access to rainforest, caves and Mayan sites. Compared to many islands, it’s easier to add meaningful topside adventures without giving up dive time, which is a big reason our repeat guests keep coming back.
