AGGIE GREY'S RESORT

Aqua Samoa is ideally located for those who stay in the nearby resort Aggie Grey's, but is it 35 klms from the main town Apia which is where we stayed. Aggie Greys is a little large for our liking and next time I would probably stay at La Vasa - a lovely small resort further from town and also further from the noise of the airport - which is right beside Aggie Greys.

AGGIE GREY'S DIVING

The dive master who took us for 5 days diving at Aqua Samoa had good local knowledge of the dive sites and she and the local boat hands take great care assisting you with loading your gear so you are not exhausted before you even enter the water. With relatively small boats the dive groups are small which is a nice change, but it did mean that diving seemed restricted to sites close by and we were not given the opportunity to dive the local wreck or Apolima Island. However for a small extra fee we did get to visit Manono Island as another diver was willing to do the same. We would have lived a night dive too but again this required a minimum number of 6 divers which was no possible - we never saw that many divers on the same day once. As we enjoy photography as well we found that the dive leader was a little too far ahead and didn't really allow much time for this. As far as the dive sites go, Samoa is still recovering from the Tsunami of 5 years ago - you can see the reef is regenerating but so much has died, and overfishing seems to have taken a huge toll. I did see a Napolean Wrasse the size of a small car though!!! amazing! The divemaster seemed to compensate for the lack of fish and fewer marine animals by making 'topography' dives - swim throughs a key feature.
