Dive Overview

From Phillipe Cousteau to David Doubliet, just about every diver who has experienced diving with them has stated that Cayman’s East End is one of the Caribbean’s premier dive spots. Offering pristine reefs, breathtaking wall dives, excellent visibility and incredible diving.

The Cayman Islands have strict marine conservation laws to protect the underwater environment. Many of our 55 dive sites are within a short boat ride, including the legendary Jack McKenny’s Canyons – one of East End’s famous dive sites.

Here, corals, canyons and sand chutes lead you thorough into pristine deep blue waters of the outer reef before plunging to 6,000ft. These exhilarating walls are covered with brightly hued sponges, corals and sea fans.

The 80 -86 degree water is second to none when it comes to clarity and it is said that more underwater photographs are taken in the Cayman Islands than in all other Caribbean destinations.

The Cayman Islands’ trademark turtles are common sight and eagle rays, angelfish, reef sharks and grouper count among the 500 species of fish that have been documented here.

Dive Trips

Two Tank (Wall/Reef) boat trips are scheduled every morning and every afternoon, seven days a week. Night dives are scheduled every Monday and Thursday night. Stingray city trips are scheduled every Friday and we also offer a Three Tank Safari dive trip every Wednesday. The boats leave once everyone has checked in onboard the craft. Please plan to arrive on time so they can ensure that all your gear is working properly and you have everything you need for a fun dive prior to leaving the dock.

Dive sites are chosen by the Captain every trip and are not decided until that day. There are several factors that influence captain's choice; wind, current and visibility. They will also check which sites you have already visited this dive trip so as not to repeat those, and if you do have any specific requested they will try to accommodate these.

Compass Point Dive Resort - This excellent dive resort is on the far east tip of Grand Cayman island. The CPD resort offers excellent packages for dive vacations. Most even include a rental car. The only down here (topside 4 stars) is it is away from the nightlife of Georgetown. But if all you want to do is dive and have a few drinks in the evening, and you don't want to rough it, you will be well served with Compass Point Dive resort. When I run a group trip that wants Caymen this is the place I go.
You get 4 dives a day plus a night dive on Wednesday (with most packages) in some truely spectacular dive sites. There are reefs a short boat ride away and there are big animals a little further out. There is a very long wall and you can kill lionfish to your heart's content. The dive boat is roomy, comfortable and fast. You can do some beach dives if you like also. CPD resort also as a real life dive shop. Not a resort shop that only sells T-shirts and bumper stickers.
In the evening there are BBQs and plenty of chances to socialize with other divers. And they will cook your lionfish for you. There are also a couple of bars nearby. Take the rental car and drive to Hell, about half way between Georgetown and CPD.
This place is great for a group or a couple that don't want to venture to the outer islands. Excellent diving, smaller crowds and some nightlife. Compass Point also has a place on the north side of Grand Caymen but I have never been there. My guess is they are similiar customer service wise.

I have been to grand Cayman many times diving but August of 2013 was my first time on the east end of the Island. Compass Point Dive Resort has an on site scuba team, Ocean Frontiers Dive Shop a 5 star PADI certified shop.

I stayed in a 1 bedroom condo for 2 weeks, cooked most of my meals and ate a few at the restaurant on the resort as well as local restaurants a few miles away. The condo was beautiful and fully furnished, airconditioned, Jacuzzi jet bathtub, Washer & Dryer, TV and internet included. A rental car was included in my package that I picked up at the airport, a quick stop by the grocery store and wine store, and off I went to the resort. Remember, you will drive on the left side of the road, so take it easy. The drive took about 1 hour and was an easy and scenic drive.

Diving: I did 3 boat dives a day, nitrox and a few night dives. I even did a 90 minute shallow macro dive, seen the biggest bump head parrot fish. Found turtles, sharks and lots of nice coral and plenty of fish. Some of the guides were outstanding and would model for you as well as find great critters. The silver sides were there so brought home some amazing pictures. Also did a day trip to see the sting rays and spent hours taking pictures of them. The dramatic sky added to the excitement when taking pictures that were over/under. Many times when we took our boat ride to dive sites, I seen numerous eagle rays. I thought the viability was very good for the Caribbean, +75 foot. The Kittiwake Wreck was very enjoyable to dive, it is a lot bigger then you would guess.

Downside to the dive boats: Many times we had lionfish hunters on the boat, seems they get paid for the fish they spear. The issue I had with them was when I was taking pictures they were often under you rustling up the landscape in their hunting pursuits. So lots of backscatter, I think if they had gone to an area away from the photographers it would have been better for everyone. Their spears were in the camera rinse tanks, so I didn't use the tanks.

Camera: This is the down side of the resort for me, no camera room and my condo was on the 3 rd floor at the end of the resort. I used the bathtub as a rinse tank and the beautiful formal dining room table as my set up area. On the way to the boat they have a rinse tank you can use for a quick leak test.

Food: The on site restaurant was expensive but I purchased groceries before getting to the resort, and yes they were also costly. There are many restaurants in the area, some high end some reasonable. Get out and take a road trip for dinner at least for a few nights, you are on vacation. There is a coffee machine in your condo, remember to buy coffee.

Added fun to the resort: 2 swim pools, hiking close by the resort, a well furnished store for scuba stuff and very nice employees through out the resort.

Cost was about 2500.00 per week. extra costs, nitrox, and extra dives

I have stayed at Compass Point three times. This is a great condo resort. The first and third times with my wife, the second time with a buddy. First time was in an oceanfront 1 bedroom. Second and third time in poolside 1 bedroom. Found the pool side condo to be a little larger. One of us stayed in the bedroom, the other on one of the fold down beds. 2 bathrooms made it perfect for buddies. A hearty breakfast is included with their package. There is a great restaurant on site. Gas grills are available next to their beautiful pool and hot tub. Their east end location is away from all the cruise ship and destination wedding tourists in the Seven Mile Beach area. Many great restaurants in the area. Overall, a great vacation destination.

Compass Point is the resort of choice if you want to try diving at Grand Cayman's East End. Which you should, because the diving is really excellent, and far less crowded than other areas! Accommodations are in spacious, comfortable suites with kitchens, a dining area, bedroom, and nice bathrooms. Nearby markets make it easy to buy breakfast and lunch groceries, even dinner, if you are so inclined. That saves some $$$. Eagle Rays restaurant is on premises, and offers three meals a day that are good, but a la carte, paid separately. The staff are friendly and happily fix any problems with the room quickly.

East End diving is really good. There are wall dives, coral gardens, a special spot for macro photography, and shipwrecks. Some dive sites are thick with fish life, and sharks are seen from time to time, along with eagle rays. The dive boats are comfortable, clean, and well set up. The dive shop is well stocked and staffed by helpful people. It's become my favorite place on Grand Cayman!
