Dive Information
- The Cabo Pulmo Reef is the northernmost LIVING coral reef in the Eastern Pacific ocean and the ONLY living coral reef in the entire Sea of Cortez. It has become a popular attraction for divers visiting this remote area as well as divers shuttling in by various methods from both Cabo San Lucas and La Paz.
- The reef itself owes its existence to the natural geography of the surrounding bay which shelters the reef and keeps the waters constant at approximately 70 degrees, an essential environment for coral growth. The bay is an ideal place for snorkelers and beginning divers with much of the reef accessible from shore. However, there are also spectacular sites awaiting the more advanced and experienced divers with most dives between 30-70 feet.

Everything about the recent dive trip my boys and I took to Cabo Pulmo Resort was beyond our high expectations. It started when we were met at the Cabo San Lucas airport by the friendly driver of a new Suburban holding up a Welcome sign with our name on it. We next got handed cans of ice cold beer and set out for the 90-minute trip to the dive centre. The rest of the week was non-stop excellent diving on the marine preserve that is Cabo Pulmo, twice with planned encounters with 30 or so bull sharks on cleaning station/wreck dives. The sharks were so close we could have touched them! Mind-blowing!Without exception, the dive centre staff was thoroughly professional, deeply knowledgeable and fun.The air-conditioned bungalow was lovely and the food was delicious. Not only did we have a superb little holiday, but we made friends with dive master Daniel, marine biologist Santiago and owner Cole. All of whom went out of their way to make us feel at home.I have been diving for decades and hold a divemaster certificate. Cabo Pulmo Resort rates up there with the best in the world. We will return in February or March for whale season.

After diving in the Cabo San Lucas area, we made our way to Cabo Pulmo to stay and dive with the Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort. We had a rental car and the drive was very pleasant . The last six miles is on a somewhat rough dirt road. The resort is located right on the beach with bungalows and casitas scattered aground the property. Our casita was a very large (about 600 square feet) “studio” type accommodation with a full kitchen, living area, dining area, queen bed, indoor bathroom, and a great outdoor shower. It also has an upstairs covered deck with a table and chairs. There is a partial ocean view. We elected to take advantage of the “Eat, Sleep, Dive” plan which is all inclusive. Cabo Pulmo is very small (population 114) and there are a few other restaurants in town, but eating at the resort for all of our meals was very convenient. The resort restaurant serves an international menu with large portions and we thought the food and service were excellent. There is a swimming pool on the property used for scuba training but guests are free to use it throughout the day.The on-site dive shop is operated by a very experienced staff and runs like a well oiled machine. Boats can't moor in the marine reserve, so the crews must launch the dive boats from the beach. It's an awe inspiring operation. Diving is very easy, mostly shallow reefs or wrecks covered with massive schools of fish, large grouper, and bull sharks, to name a few of the things to see. The dive guides from CPBR are very professional and act as unofficial guardians of the marine Park. The dive shop has a well-stocked gift shop for t-shirts, hats, and other apparel. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at CPBR and can’t wait to return.
