Diving In Loreto

The unique geographical factors influencing the Sea of Cortez make it home to a very diverse range of marine creatures, including several endemic species found nowhere else. Loreto offers the ideal setting for discovering all the Sea of Cortez has to offer, with a range of creatures from all spectrums of the marine life scale. Tropical reefs, deep walls, and pinnacles are home to a plethora of soft corals, gorgonians, and fascinating endemic black corals, while clumps of hard coral add even more color and dimension to the reef. These in turn are home to almost 900 species of fish and other marine creatures, including 90 that are endemic to the Sea of Cortez. The tropical-like conditions close to shore encourage a multitude of vibrant warm water species such as angelfish, blacknose butterflyfish, Panamic sergeant majors, and Moorish idols. Adding to the bustling reef are large schools of graybar grunts, snappers, yellowtail surgeonfish, and plentiful rays.

This abundance of life is watched over by turtles, shoaling jacks and barracuda, and huge schools of mobula rays between May and August. There are also two sea lion colonies, the residents of which provide constant entertainment when encountered on dives. In addition to this, the winter and spring months see high numbers of whale sharks entering the Sea of Cortez, as well as the area's biggest visitors, whales. The Sea of Cortez hosts one-third of the world's cetaceans, and Loreto is one of the best places to encounter blue whales, fin whales, sperm whales, and even humpback whales. A resident pod of fin whales can be spotted throughout the year, as well as common and bottlenose dolphins, and the occasional visiting orca pod.

While the Sea of Cortez may be best known for its big migratory visitors, Loreto also boasts some notable macro for those with sharp eyesight. An exciting variety of nudibranchs, flatworms, and a multitude of crustaceans can be found on almost every dive. Add to this blennies, gobies, and jawfish and you'll definitely want to pack your macro lens.
