About Fanifo Lofa
Fanifo Lofa is a small, owner-operated eco retreat on Uoleva Island in the Ha'apai group of Tonga. With just five handcrafted beachfront fales and a maximum of ten guests at any time, the experience is genuinely personal: the owners live on-site, cook your meals, run your whale encounters, and know every whale by name.
The retreat runs on solar power, collects its own rainwater, and grows much of its own food. Ha'apai itself is one of Tonga's least-visited island groups, which means cleaner water, quieter reefs, and far fewer boats on the water during whale season. If you're looking for somewhere remote, sustainable, and built around real ocean encounters rather than mass tourism, Fanifo Lofa is it
Accommodation Overview
Fanifo Lofa has 5 handcrafted fales, all positioned directly on the beach. Four are beachfront ensuite fales for up to two guests each, and one is a family fale set slightly back from the beach. Each fale includes king or twin bedding with luxury toppers, a private deck with uninterrupted ocean views, an ensuite bathroom with hot shower, 240V power, and high-speed unlimited internet. No air conditioning, but the natural ventilation and island breeze more than compensate.

How To Get There
Fly into Nuku'alofa (Tongatapu International Airport), then take a 50-minute domestic flight to Ha'apai. Guests typically connect through Sydney, Nadi, or Auckland. Once you land in Ha'apai, the Fanifo Lofa team coordinates your transfer to the island by taxi and boat, which takes around 30 minutes total. Airport transfers are available at a surcharge.
Dive Overview
Fanifo Lofa does not have an onsite dive center, but scuba diving is available in the area through local operators. Ha'apai is one of Tonga's least-dived island groups, which means the reefs are largely pristine and the sites rarely crowded. Visibility regularly hits 30 meters, and the underwater terrain is varied: coral gardens, walls, caves, tunnels, pinnacles, and even a dive site with a hydrothermal vent (Hot Spring Cave). Reef sharks, manta rays, turtles, dolphins, and large schools of fish are common sightings.

Food & Drinks
Dining at Fanifo Lofa is part of the experience. All stays are fully inclusive with continental breakfast, a packed lunch (usually enjoyed on the water or at a deserted beach), and a two-course dinner each evening. Meals are built around a farm-to-table model: the team harvests daily from the on-site gardens, bakes their own bread, and serves fresh local fish.
Cuisine is a mix of local and international. Dietary requirements are catered to with advance notice. Guests are also welcome to bring their own alcohol. All stays are full-board, covering all meals, snacks, water, tea, coffee, and alcoholic beverages.
Whale Encounters
Ha'apai is one of the best places on Earth to swim with humpback whales, and Fanifo Lofa has been running licensed, ethical whale encounters since 2009. Between July and October, humpbacks migrate from Antarctica to these warm, clear waters to give birth, nurse their calves, and court. The Ha'apai group sees significantly less vessel traffic than Vava'u, which makes for a calmer, more natural experience.
Fanifo Lofa operates its own custom New Zealand-built RIB (twin 200hp), purpose-built for whale operations. The vessel is stable, fully shaded, and fitted with a hydrophone so you can hear whale song underwater. Groups are small: a maximum of four swimmers enter the water at a time with a licensed guide. The approach is strictly whale-led. If a whale shows disinterest, the team moves on. No chasing, no pressure.
