A Snorkeler's Week in the Bahamas

By Travel Director Katie Yonker

A French Angelfish in the Bahamas

The Bahamas has a way of turning a simple week on the water into something you want to repeat. Even with Hurricane Erin reshaping the plan, our itinerary delivered reasonably calm seas, golden light, and an easy rhythm of swim, eat, relax, repeat. Aggressor offers occasional snorkel-only itineraries as part of their "Unique Adventures" and they are perfect for non-divers, or those just looking to explore the ocean without the hassle of all the gear.

Why the Bahamas Works

Warm, clear water, short travel times, and an underwater cast that is reliably present. Think elkhorn and finger corals, waving fields of gorgonian, and a steady flow of reef residents, from parrotfish and grunts to barracuda and stingrays. On deck, it's friendly and relaxed, and the crew matches each day's conditions to the best sites.

Day 1 — Nassau, Mahoni, Hollywood, Elkhorn

Our journey began at Mahoni Wreck, where schools of sergeant majors, chubs, and grunts swirled around the sunken structure, offering a lively start to the week. At Hollywood Bowl, sandy patches were alive with reef fish and curious barracuda drifting past, making for a relaxing snorkel. The day ended at Elkhorn Reef, where towering coral branches created a forest of color, sheltering clouds of chromis and schools of snapper patrolling the reef edge.

Day 2 — South West Reef Trio, Crossing East

We explored three vibrant sites along the South West Reef, each offering a new perspective. Colorful damselfish darted between coral heads, queen angelfish glided majestically across the reef, and sponges added bright accents to the scene. As the sun dipped lower, we began a smooth crossing to Southeast Nassau, with calm seas carrying us toward the next adventure.

Day 3 — Periwinkle, Pac Man, Marina Reset

The group enjoyed two leisurely snorkels at Periwinkle Reef, where shallow, crystal-clear waters allowed for close encounters with abundant fish life. At Pac Man Reef, coral heads bustled with goatfish, grunts, and trumpetfish stealthily hunting among the shadows. By evening, we returned to the marina, recharged with a comfortable night's rest before setting out for the Exumas.

Day 4 — Exumas Arrival, North House

The Exumas greeted us with calm seas as we drifted over North House Reef, where finger corals stretched toward the surface and schools of wrasse, tangs, and barracuda kept us company. Each of the three stops along the reef revealed something new—from dense coral gardens to sandy patches alive with curious reef fish.

Day 5 — Hammerhead, Barracuda, Flat Rock, Night Magic

Hammerhead Gulch brought overhangs and ledges full of parrotfish, butterflyfish, and passing stingrays. At Barracuda Shoals, we swam through fields of waving soft corals while stacked schools of grunts created dazzling silver walls. Flat Rock revealed a wide open reef, perfect for drifting slowly and taking in the darting fish and colorful corals. That night, back at Barracuda Shoals, the reef transformed as nocturnal creatures emerged. Lobster, crabs, and hunting fish kept the night snorkelers fascinated under the glow of dive lights.

Day 6 — A Farewell at Barracuda

We returned for one last snorkel at Barracuda Shoals, where the reef once again delivered with crystal clear waters, lively fish, and a peaceful send-off. By late afternoon, the boat made its way back, and at 5:00 PM the group gathered for the traditional Farewell Cocktail Party and Awards Ceremony. Laughter and applause filled the salon as fun awards were given to every guest. The crossing home was smooth and reflective, as guests shared memories of the week and the friendships formed.

The Onboard Experience

Life on Bahamas Aggressor is comfortable and social. Cabins are compact and efficient, common spaces make it easy to mingle, and the daily cadence is unhurried. The crew sets the tone with safety briefings, local knowledge, and a friendly, professional style that keeps the week light and well organized. Meals are a highlight. Chef Mayra is outstanding, attentive to dietary needs, rich in flavor, and her theme nights bring a celebratory feel.

Snorkel-Only Weeks

Snorkel itineraries are curated for shallow, bright sites with gentle entries, which makes them ideal for mixed-experience groups and families. Night snorkels are a memorable addition, and the gentle pace suits photographers and casual explorers alike.

Final Word

The Bahamas blends easy travel, warm water, and welcoming reefs into a week that feels both restorative and full of discovery. Whether you come for effortless snorkeling, a first taste of liveaboard life, or a relaxed escape with a little underwater magic at night, you will find plenty here to love, and reasons to return.

Her interest in scuba diving started many years ago while on vacation in the British Virgin Islands. Though not yet certified, she was mesmerized by the marine life below the surface. As soon as she returned to Los Angeles, she swapped her mask and snorkel for a regulator and BCD (and a mountain of other dive equipment) and hasn't looked back since!

Katie is no stranger to the Southern California waters, but prefers to travel around the world and experience new cultures, food, and marine environments. She has visited and led trips to many of the top liveaboard destinations. Her most memorable dive moment was swimming 20 feet from humpback whales off the coast of Moorea. At the top of the list for her next dive vacation: Alor.

When she's not in the office, you're likely to find Katie attending a concert in LA, snowboarding at Mammoth, attending to Sadie, or cheering on her alma mater, The Michigan Wolverines. Go Blue!

Caribbean

The Caribbean is a big place, and “best” depends a lot on what you’re looking for. Some islands are all about easy, warm reef dives and shore‑based freedom; others are shark meccas, deep walls, or once‑in‑a‑lifetime animal encounters. Over the years I’ve dived most of the major islands on this list, and what follows are 12 places I’d happily return to – for very different reasons.

Diving in St Eustatius: Quiet Caribbean, Big Diving

Caribbean

If you drew up a list of Caribbean islands where the diving is far better than their fame, St Eustatius would be right near the top. Statia is small, low‑key and largely unknown outside diving circles, yet underwater it punches far above its weight: healthy reefs, a surprising number of wrecks, and an almost eerie lack of other bubbles.
