La Paz 2016 Photo Group Trip

With Bluewater Travel

Words & Pictures By Brent Durand

The Sea of Cortez holds a very special place in my heart because, well, it itself is a very special place. Armed with a GoPro Hero 5 and two I-Torch Venom 38 video lights, I flew down in late October for Bluewaters small group photo trip.

Amazing whale shark moment captured a with GoPro Hero 5

The beauty of this trip was the adventure itself - we camped under the stars for two nights, searched for and found hammerhead sharks, drove through mountain roads in pouring rain, and sampled local food at some of the best restaurants in town. This adventure attracted a great group of divers all looking to shoot unique photos and videos while experiencing the slow life of La Paz. After all, where else can you spend hours with sea lions, swim with whale sharks, dodge schools of fish being chased by birds, stare in awe at anxious signal blennies, night dive with hundreds of mobula rays, and play with some of the friendliest jawfish in the world. La Paz is the place where you can be motoring out in the boat, see dolphins and be in the water within 60 seconds.

Snack time! Captured with a GoPro Hero 5

We had all these adventures during the La Paz photo trip, plus several different photo and editing talks along the way. The two nights of glamping on Isla Espiritu Santo were very fun, with great hospitality and some incredible meals.

A huge thanks to Bluewater for planning the trip, Fun Baja for taking such good care of us, and all my friends who joined the trip - I know well all be diving together again soon!

Swimming with whale sharks is one of the ocean’s most humbling wildlife encounters. Despite their size—some grow over 12 metres long—these slow-moving filter feeders are gentle and pose no threat to respectful snorkellers. In this guide, you’ll learn when and where to go, how to choose a responsible operator, what to expect in the water, and the key safety and ethical tips that help protect both you and the whale sharks.
