Alor (best-kept secret in diving), offers unexplored coral gardens and untouched reefs, rhinopias, anemones and many unusual critters, plus an active volcano which erupts every 30 mins. In Maluku, explore a reef teeming with hundreds of sea-snakes and look out for incredibly rare critters (if lucky, the psychedelic frogfish) and dive one of deepest seas in the world (Banda). Alor

  • Diving in Alor and the waters of Nusa Tenggara Timur brings a constant source of marine life surprises, with a wealth of small creatures to big fish and mammals. There are a wide variety of dive sites to be explored during our liveaboard trips, from muck dives in the bays of Beangabang and Kalabahi, to the always fishy Alor Kecil and the colorful walls of Pulau Reta. The Indonesian government has recently agreed to protect this area in order to secure a safe route for migrating cetaceans as they pass through the straits to their feeding grounds in the deep waters of the Banda Sea.
  • Alor liveaboard trips offer divers the opportunity to see some of the most spectacular and untouched coral reefs in Indonesia along with the chance to witness unique behaviors of the many rare and wonderful critters to be found in the Pantar Strait.
  • Divers can expect to see Rhinopias (lacey scorpionfish), pygmy seahorses, manta rays, schools of trevally and even the occasional whale! Departing from Maumere or Kupang, our 7 -10 night dive trips not only take you through the wonders of the
  • Pantar Strait but to lesser dived areas including Rusa, Adonara and Serbete. These areas offer unique habitats, coral reefs, pelagic action, macro critter spotting and the opportunity for island visits.
  • Damai I liveaboard offers a range of trip dates to ensure you can experience this superb destination in depth. Dives in Alor are also offered within the Banda Sea and Forgotten Islands itineraries so you can explore more stunning Indonesian reefs.

Bali

  • Diving in Bali offers an opportunity to experience some amazing underwater treasures.
  • This beautiful island boasts great macro opportunities in the north and east of the island.
  • The annual season for Mola Mola sightings off Nusa Penida in the south can also give you the chance to dive with reef mantas at Manta Point.
  • The USAT Liberty, off the coast of Tulamben in the northeast, is one of the most famous shipwrecks in the world offering amazing wide angle and macro opportunities.
  • Liveaboard diving in Bali on Damai I would be included in an itinerary of Sumbawa and Komodo.

Banda Sea

  • Diving in the Banda Sea offers some of the most unique diving adventures to be found in Indonesia.
  • Located between the much publicized Raja Ampat islands to the north and the venerable Komodo National Park to the south, this exciting outpost has distinct volcanic islands and seamounts which rise from the depths offering superb wall diving and boundless marine life.
  • Banda Sea liveaboard trips visit the historically significant island of Banda Neira, once the center of the Dutch/Portuguese Spice Trade dating back to the early 1600s, now a virtually inaccessible outpost of Indonesia offering amazing macro subjects and encounters with the rare mandarin fish demonstrating their lively mating rituals.
  • A jewel in the crown of the Banda Sea lies further south at Pulau Manuk where seas are populated by hundreds of sea snakes.
  • Dive Nusa Laut for both an example of healthy coral reefs and a chance to see hammerhead sharks.
  • Damai I liveaboard offers multiple dates departing out of Ambon to visit these pristine reefs and cruise in luxury on seas of indescribable beauty and biodiversity.
  • The liveaboards also combine dives in the Banda Sea in our Forgotten Islands, Alor and Raja Ampat itineraries.

Cendrawasih Bay

  • Diving in Cenderawasih Bay National Marine Park allows you to experience one of Indonesia’s newest and most exciting diving destinations and DAMAI is one of the most experienced operators in this area. In fact, one of the original survey trips was undertaken from the decks of Damai I and our staff have many months working in this challenging and remote location.
  • Cenderawasih Bay liveaboard trips offer you the unique opportunity of spending hours diving or snorkeling with multiple Whale Sharks and we regularly see the sub-adults around the local fishing platforms in only a few meters of water. However, the area also boasts an incredibly rich history from the many battles between Allied and Japanese forces in the area during WWII and the area is littered with diveable wrecks of aircraft and ships. Finally, there are the unique biological aspects of the bay.
  • Geologically the area has been isolated for many millions of years and as a result, many unique
  • and endemic species have developed. Fish and creature watchers will be delighted by many species that they will have never seen before.
  • Damai I liveaboard offers a short season of trips out of Biak which concentrate in the inner and outer bay or combine dives in Cenderawasih with Raja Ampat itineraries.

Gorontalo and Togean Islands

  • Diving in Gorontalo offers divers the chance to visit this little-dived area with excellent macro sites around the mouth of the river and steep walls famous for their unique Petrosia lignose, AKA Salvadore Dali sponges.
  • Gorontalo liveaboard trips offer the chance to travel down to the Togean Islands nestled in the Gulf of Tomini. You will be able to dive at the island of Una Una with its beautiful coral reefs and then move south to the island of Kadidiri in the hope of finding
  • the very small endemic Hippocampus waleananus, otherwise known as the Waleanus pygmy seahorse.
  • The highlight of the Togeans is the chance to visit the Red Jellyfish Lake. This freshwater lake is conveniently situated just a two-minute walk from the shore and there you will find the beautiful red jellyfish which will not sting.

Halmahera

  • Diving in Halmahera offers a variety of underwater experiences including a spattering of wrecks in the north, some world class muck diving sites in the south and some of the best examples of hard coral gardens in Indonesia.
  • Halmahera liveaboard trips offer divers the chance to dive all corners of this remote and diverse archipelago. North of the Banda Sea and west of the world famous Raja Ampat lies this underpopulated island and its neighboring archipelago of volcanoes, sandy islands and mangroves. Visit the drop-offs in south Bacan to see Barracuda, the islands of Goraici to enjoy schooling reef fish and bait balls attracting numerous hunters, tunas, and mackerel and hunt under the docks at Makian and Leilei for critters.
  • This is definitely a hot spot and we believe the best is still to be discovered!
  • Join Damai I liveaboard for some great luxury liveaboard diving out of the volcanic island of Ternate.
  • The liveaboards combine dives in Halmahera in our Raja Ampat itineraries.

Komodo

  • Diving in the Komodo National Park is an amazing experience. The abundance and variety of large and small animals, reef creatures and pelagics, invertebrates and vertebrates, shallow reefs, drop-offs and drift dives produces exceptional diving, widely regarded as some of the best in the world.
  • Komodo liveaboard trips offer divers the chance to visit all the iconic dive sites like Batu Bolong and Castle and Crystal Rock as well as a chance to enjoy some lesser known beauties in both the north and the south of the area. You will also be given the opportunity to go ashore for a short trek with the endemic Komodo dragons.
  • Damai I liveaboard offer dates throughout the year and the charters leave from both Bima, Sumbawa and Labuanbajo, Flores to
  • ensure you experience this amazing destination in depth.
  • Damai can also combine this itinerary with diving in Bali and Alor.

Raja Ampat

  • Diving in Raja Ampat is breathtaking, with the marine life thriving from the sea floor to the surface and the colorful reef teeming with activity. There are sites that are so pristine and packed with growth, that a photographer is hard-pressed to find a spot to place a steadying finger. Exotic sea life and macro critters abound of course, and photo opportunities border on overwhelming.
  • Raja Ampat liveaboard trips offer divers the opportunity to explore the entire region. You have the colorful soft coral areas around the southern islands of Misool with the opportunity to see sharks and mobula rays. In the north, you have the world famous current rich Dampier Straits with iconic dive sites like Cape Kri and Blue Magic. In the east, you can visit pristine coral gardens and climb to the viewpoint above the lagoon at Penemu. In the north, you can dive with mantas at Kawe and go critter hunting in Aljui Bay.
  • Luxury liveaboard diving on Damai I offers charters out of Sorong and gives you the opportunity to explore this extensive area in comfort. You can combine this excellent itinerary with other destinations like Triton Bay and Cenderawasih Bay to complete the Papuan diving experience.

The Forgotten Islands

  • Diving in the Forgotten Islands brings you to incredibly rich waters and the area is typified by crystal clear water, deep walls and pinnacles, awesome overhangs and swim-throughs, beautiful pristine corals, huge barrel sponges and large schools of fish.
  • Some of the islands in South Maluku, like Nils Desperandum and Terbang are famous for sightings of hammerhead sharks. Others have walls with colorful soft corals like at Dai and still others are current swept and full of reef fish like the channel at Lelar.
  • Forgotten Islands liveaboard trips offer divers the opportunity to cruise around this chain of remote, beautiful islands known as the Ring of Fire, while enjoying the casual comfort, amenities and unique service that has made the Damai vessels the most desirable liveaboards in Indonesia.
  • Damai I liveaboard offers multiple dates departing from Maumere, Kupang, Saumlaki or Ambon to fit your every need.
  • Damai also combines dives in the Forgotten Islands with our Alor and Banda Sea itineraries.

Triton Bay

  • Diving in Triton Bay offers divers the chance to visit the colorful reefs which are fed by the nutrient-rich waters from the rivers producing huge fields of soft corals, giant sea fans and clouds of planktonic feeding fishes. Its remote location has led to it being described as a ‘species factory’ by leading marine scientists; the region’s dive sites are swarming with fish and almost every nook is occupied by an exotic invertebrate.
  • Triton Bay liveaboard trips offer divers the chance to explore the whole region including Namatote island in the north in search of the elusive tiger shrimp on the colonial anemones and the current rich Aiduma Island in the south with its iconic dive sites like the soft coral covered Little Komodo.
  • In the south, you can enjoy clearer water and plenty of fish at the island of Dramai and also dive iconic
  • sites like Batu Jeruk on the southern tip of Aiduma, well named for the covering of orange soft corals
  • Join the comfort of Damai I liveaboard on charters out of Kaimana and combine diving Triton Bay with our Raja Ampat itineraries.

The Damai II is the second best liveaboard we have been on. The staff was great and very knowledgable. We had long dive times and valet diving. Camera facilities great. Our room was delightful. The cruise director would ask us after breakfast what we wanted for lunch and dinner that day, give each of us several options. Since many people have food issues this was the best service I have ever had. Great macro diving.

The Damai 2 is a modified phinisi schooner plying the waters if Indonesia. Our time on the Damai was inclusive of the Raja Ampats and Cenderwashi Bay. On arrival in Nabire we wer met by the staff and driven to the boat.
We were shown to our stateroom that was bigger than most luxurious hotels. Large bedroom, huge comfortable bed, separate shower and bathroom, lanai with two lounges and a large TV to view our own videos/photographs or videos of our choice.
The camera room was spacious with individual work tables that included electrical outlets 110/220, light source and ample closed locker space under the workstations.
Equipment: Damai is one of the few operators who can supply all your diving gear needs. This is a great advantage to save weight charges on the local airlines.
Dive guides: All experienced critter spotters...welcomed if you are looking for maco shots like I do.
Dive groups: The boat can accommodate 14 divers. Groups are divided up so there is never more than four in a group.
Dive deck: Each diver has their individual station that includes a wash tank for your camera. Your assigned dive guide lays out your gear prior to the dive and upon return washes everything and hangs it to dry/await the next dive. Tanks are filled at your dive station.
Dive boats: Your gear will be loaded by the dive guides unless you prefer to carry it yourself. Upon returning from the dive you are met by the crew, handed a hot towel and a glass of water.
Food: Each morning a menu is laid out for each guest. You choose what you want (the menu is limited, but adequate) Wine is served at dinner. If you want other liquor you are welcome to bring it.
Writing about diving the Cenderwashi with the whale sharks and diving the Raja Ampats would take volumes, but for an enjoyable experience I highly recommend the Damai 2 or its sister boat Damai.

In March of 2009 my daughter and I flew to Kaimana to board the Damai I for a trip to Triton Bay and then onto Misool. The trip got off to a rocky start because pirates were not allowing boats to go into Triton Bay so that part of our itinerary was deleted. Unfortunately the first two days of the trip were then spent cruising to the Misool area where the real good diving got underway. We did do some diving in route, but it was not all that great.

Much has been written about the actual diving in this area and you can see my region review elsewhere here. I also highly recommend the Burt Jones book on Raja Ampat diving. They had this available for sale on the boat and it is fantastic. It gives very detailed description of diving at each site and we used it throughout our trip to know what to expect.

The Damai boat is beautiful and at the best in the world class. The two cabins in the back (we had one of them) have balconies out the back. If you want to combine a honeymoon and a dive trip together, this would be the best. The bathroom was also enormous. All of the toiletries were great, kind of unusual for a dive boat.

The food was very good with a lot of variety. We had at least two choices for every meal with lots of fruit and salad items to go with the main courses. They had great post-dive snacks which were warm, chocolate, and tasty.

The Damai had two skifs for taking divers to dive sites. They were each designed to make it especially easy for divers to get in and out of the boat. If I am still diving at 80, I would want to dive on these boats. Safety was a big concern at all times and the divemasters always went out to each site before we dove to make sure that currents were acceptable. Even with that caution, currents in this area change quickly and we did have some strong challenges in the Misool area.

One of the real treats on board was that the boat offered pretty much open access to the on board massage service. It was great and my daughter got about two per day.

Because the boat only has 10 passengers, the groups were always small. We had one divemaster for each group of 4 or 5 people. They spent most of their time looking for pygmy seahorses or some other small things.

Tanks and gear stayed on he boat (designed by divers I am sure), so you never had to carry anything back and forth to the boat. As a result, the dive deck was calm and civilized.

Laundry was done every day and the boat would always wash anything that you wanted. It really cuts down how much you have to bring with.

Pretty much everyone on board was an underwater photographer and the boat had a large room with personal space for everyone. It was the best that I had ever seen on a boat. Of course, the subject matter under the water is simply the best in the world.

The ending was also nice. we had one bill which covered everything including airport taxes. So we didn't need to do anything but get our butts on the plane once we left the boat.

You really have to want to get here to make this trip. Our flight took us from Minneapolis to Tokyo to Jakarta to Ambon and then to Manokwari. The airport there is remote and far from anywhere. Our departure was delayed a full day because of riots in the town which was a bit scary. As a result of the 1.5 day delay, we missed a day of diving in the Cenderawasih Bay area which was OK, because it was pretty mediocre by Indonesia standards.

The Damai II is simply the nicest dive boat in the world. The rooms are enormous and spectacular. Many hotel rooms are not this nice. The boat had a nice home theater and we often watched movies in the evening. The food was very good and we had a lot of variety given the remoteness of the location. They had great post dive snacks. The only thing that they missed was popcorn and they promised to find it for future trips.

Of course, people come here to see whale sharks and this is the best place in the world to see them. I have also seen them at Darwin, but this blows that away. They are many, the water is warm and clear and you can literally spend the day watching them. We had two and sometimes three at a time. We parked our boat and just went in the water as we wanted without any real diving schedule. We also got to go on the fisherman platforms and feed the whale sharks from the surface. My memory of watching my daughter feed one of these beasts will always be with me.

We then headed to our next encounter which was with leatherback turtles which were laying their eggs on shore. Like the whale sharks, they did not disappoint. It was a life highlight for me. We also got to visit a native village and several of us played volleyball with the local people. I don't think that this was a standard part of the tour, but one of our crew members came from the village.

Finally, we moved on to Raja Ampat where we spent our final 3 days. Of course, the reefs and fish there are world class. If I could repeat just one dive trip in my life, I would redo this one. About the only negative was the time it took to get to Raja Ampat. It was a long cruise and took a full day without much diving.
