Anthony's Key Resort Reviews
Ian
I have been a licensed scuba diver for close to 40 years and my mini "dive adventure" to Anthony's Key exceeded my already high expectations. Every aspect of the Resort, from the airport service, to the reception/orientation, amazing accommodations right on the ocean, fantastic food & service, the well-appointed hill top bar/lounge and most of all, the friendly and helpful staff, who made it a point to know your name. The diving was top-notch, with a well-stocked dive shop (I rented my BCD, fins and regulator, as opposed to flying with it as luggage), small group oriented (8 of us for the whole week) with the same, highly experienced Divemaster (Calderon) and boat Captain, Dean. The reefs are healthy, with an abundance of marine life seen on every dive. I am normally not one to revisit locations, as my diving bucket list is a long one, but I will definitely return to Anthony's Key!

My sister and I recently visited Anthony's Key because we'd booked this trip before the pandemic and were itching to go diving. We had a wonderful time at Anthony's Key. The service was top notch and the food was ever better than I remember. Sadly though the diving isn't as good as I remember it being. The reef is covered in algae as there aren't very many fish anymore. It was super convenient getting our covid tests for our return home as the onsite clinic conducts them. We felt very safe the entire trip and would happily return again.

We bought special deal two for one. Beautiful location with veranda with hammocks overlooking the main island and dolphin show. So relaxing. Diving was excellent with clear clear waters. Great DM who was very helpful. Our first one was so so but thankfully we changed boats.. Well organized operation. Functioned like clockwork. Dives mostly 70ft and more. Wrecks like the Aguila had a resident moray that came and played with the DM. Great spotted eagle rays and turtles. Smaller fishes were present too and nice coral but obviously not as plentiful as Philippines. Food was always three course. With choices usually. Loved all the soups but the rest of the meals were hit or miss. Tipping was quite confusing. People were saying $5 to 10 per dive. Not sure whether they meant each to DM and boat captain. Difficult to figure out how to tip rest of staff. If you want to hand personal do it at least a day before because some of the staff may be off on day you leave.

Anthony's Key was pretty awesome.I followed through on the open water cert and the instructor was great. Patience, knowledge, empathy and instruction were all exceptional. Maybe a bit difficult to get the instructor to do the sign offs afterwards (they seem simply too busy) but it all worked out in the end. More on the diving (it was awesome) later. My girlfriend decided to not do the rest of the open water certs at the resort and used the snorkeling services instead during the week. She had a great time doing so. Her only complaint for the snorkeling was that the divers boats had a three times a day schedule while the snorkel boat was limited to twice a day.The accommodations were just as advertised. That is to say they were very nice. Very nice indeed. We had a cabin on the north shore of the key, with a private porch having 2 hammocks a couple of chairs and a table. The cabin had a chemical smell the first day but in talking to other guests it appeared that they had just sprayed for bugs a day before our arrival. No problem as we aired it out for a bit and the smell dissipated. Housekeeping was awesome throughout the rest of the trip also.Bugs. There are no seeums. A good bug spray will keep them away but they are certainly present. The included excursion to Maya Key saw most everyone that participated come back with bite marks. The excursion was worth the bites but be warned and bring spray and use it.The dives were (an overused adjective by now) awesome. I think I have been completely spoiled by having my first dive experience at this place. 15 minutes at the most on the drives out (except the excursion to Maya Key). Visibility at 80 feet minimum. Great equipment (I'm looking at buying a BCD of the same model they carried for rentals to replace my current BCD). The boats are well equipped and the boat captains and dive masters know their stuff. Awesome ( I said It would be overused) competence of the boat captain and the dive master. The one thing I could pick on was that I saw at one time 14 people assigned to a dive with a dive master during my experience. That seemed a bit much even to my novice experience. I would have thought that ratio would have been a bit lower at a high end resort from what I have previously heard. The place is very, very, very time and schedule orientated. They have the dive schedule regimented and quite well worked out nicely. That said, there was a single public clock at the main dock. Newbies to diving (like us) are going to be a bit lost without a wristwatch (most folks rely on a cell phone for time now days). The food was good, most all times was much better than good. It appeared that they tried to accommodate the US palate for many meals, but the offerings for seafood were well done and there were local dishes available if requested (but not on menu). The trip was great. The accommodations and experience at the resort were great. The place is definitely geared to keeping you on the reservation. No problem there since they do accommodate whatever you need via charge back to the room for everything done at the resort. We did take a couple off resort trips utilizing a resort referred contact and they were great trips. One of the waiters actually does tourist island tours and that was a great undocumented thing we took advantage of (at extra cost out of pocket. Totally worth it)..I didn't want to leave. My girlfriend didn't want to leave.May I say again, AWESOME!

I spent a week at Anthony’s Key from April 26th – May 3rd of this year – my first trip to Roatan. From arrival to departure, I found the resort team organized and friendly. They clearly cater to divers and have gotten the process down to an art form. The resort staff greeted us at the airport and loaded all of our luggage into a separate van. The guests boarded an air-conditioned bus and once everyone was accounted for, off we went! Upon arriving to the resort, we proceeded to reception where they collected all of our necessary documents, provided us with wristbands that indicated we were divers (there was a different color for snorkelers) and we all enjoyed a welcome rum punch. We had a short wait before we could get into our rooms, so we headed down to the dive shop to show our cert cards and get our dive locker/lock assignment. The lockers were plenty spacious and a hanger was provided. I would have appreciated a second hanger, but I made it work with one.My room was a key superior, so I had to take a small water taxi to get out to the key. It basically runs back and forth constantly throughout the day and we never had to wait more than a couple of minutes. All you had to do was bang on the hanging scuba tank to call it over if it wasn’t already on its way. When we got into our rooms, our luggage had already been delivered and was waiting outside of our assigned rooms. The room itself was spacious and well-appointed, with A/C (not all rooms have this but it’s a must-have for me personally) a queen bed, small desk, mini refrigerator, an in-room safe and a lovely deck facing the water. There were two hammocks and a lounge chair for relaxing as well as a clothesline to hang wet bathing suits. Free internet was provided to all guests and I never had a problem getting connected.Meals were delicious and food was plentiful. There was a breakfast buffet but you could also order off of the menu. I highly recommend trying the Honduran breakfast! Lunch and dinner started with soup or salad, your choice of entree and dessert. Be sure to keep track of your servers and bartenders. They suggest tipping at the end of your trip versus at each meal but I lost track of who took care of me and when. If I go again, I will tip as I go because I want to be sure that I am appropriately taking care of the people that are taking care of me.The dive operation was excellent. I was traveling as a single within a large group. Boats were never overcrowded and our captain and divemaster made great efforts to ensure we had a great time. If there was a particular critter divers wanted to see, they would take you where you had the best chance of a sighting. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount and variety of sea life and the reefs were healthy for the most part. All diving was from their well-maintained fleet of boats. There is one shore dive site located off of Anthony’s Key, but I never made it there as you had to carry your gear over. I just wasn’t that motivated.I signed up for both the shark dive and the dolphin dive, which were available for an additional charge. The shark dive was fantastic and well-run. There were probably 15 – 18 sharks present and lots of great action. The dolphin dive ended up being cancelled, as the dolphins went AWOL on the previous day. Apparently, it happens from time-to-time, but I was told they usually come back eventually. All in all, it was a wonderful, rustic resort and a good time was had by all. My only word of caution would be to be sure to apply bug spray (with Deet) often. I thought I had escaped getting bitten by the no-seeums, but I got a little lax with applying bug spray during the last day we were there and a few days after getting home, found myself covered with itchy red bumps.I would definitely go back again one day!

This Resort is everything you hope for in a Dive resort. It's paradise on earth. The bungalows are spacious and the one we had came with a private patio overlooking the ocean with two hammocks. There was a fridge and a spacious bathroom. We would nap on the hammocks between the morning dives and the afternoon dives and we were a few feet away from the beach where the shore diving was. The staff was very friendly, the boats were spacious and the divemaster would always ask us our opinion to pick the best spots for our next dive. They have lockers right next to the dock so you don't have to carry your gear from your room to the boat every time you dive. The food was excellent with both Local and international choices for Breakfast and the lunches and dinners always had a great selection for the meat eaters and fish eaters (It might be a little hard to eat for the Vegetarians and the vegans). The dolphin shows were a fun add-on and the nightly events were a great way to meet other divers and enjoy the island. The closest city is about 5 mn away by Taxi and is a great place to visit on the last day or just to get away from the resort. The highlights of our diving experience were the infamous "Shark Dive" and the two wrecks that they offer are must-see (but they are deep so you would need to be an advanced diver)

This was a trip of a lifetime! The staff here are great and take care of everything. My BCD had a malfunction and their knowledgeable "tech" department helped to fix my equipment, so I never missed a dive- Denny- is the best! The dive sites are all amazing and we saw turtles on every dive. The dolphin encounter is a once and a lifetime experience. The dive shop is well run (as a former SCUBA instructor, I approve) I saw several folks taking courses and chatted with the instructors- 5 star PADI shop! The resort is for all ages, but there were fewer folks under 30 years old. The food is predetermined, but excellent. Happy hour's even better!

Anthony's Key Resort (AKR) is a great, well-established and well-respected resort that offers guests the best of what the Honduran Island of Roatan has to offer. The resort is first class, compared to other resorts I have visited on this island and also in this neighborhood. It is in good repair, has beautiful grounds, and a great dining area with good food. Other resorts in the area that I have visited have been run down and had problems with hot water, plumbing, mildew, etc. This resort is very well maintained. You have a choice of hilltop rooms or rooms right on the water, on a small island a couple hundred feet from the resort. The hilltop rooms start at S168/night, and the rooms on the water (key rooms) start at 214/night. We stayed in hilltop superior room and were very happy. These rooms are closer to the resort, dive shop, and dining areas, but the key rooms are conveniently serviced by a water taxi that is available 24 hours a day. The hilltop rooms are accessed by beautiful wooden walkways through the lush jungle and lined with beautiful flowers, where agoutis (local rodents that are almost like a cross between rabbits and squirrels) and colorful birds can be seen foraging in the bushes. The meals were good and plentiful, with a wide variety of continental and local cuisine that included fresh fruits and vegetables, and wonderful, homemade ice cream. The dive resort and fleet of boats were well-run and well maintained. The dive masters and boat crews were personable and once they were comfortable with your diving skills, were happy to let you dive your own profile. They approached life with a relaxed, Caribbean vibe, that, as an experienced diver, I appreciated, but were always attentive and ready to help those newer to the sport. The only complaint that I had was that they did not always seem as diligent at finding and pointing out critters, as say dive guides at a resort like Crystal Blue in the Philippines. The diving itself was good, with quite a bit of variety, but there were not as many large schools of fish as I would have preferred. This is probably partly due to over-fishing and partly due to the invasive lionfish, but dive guides are attempting to train local predators, such as moray eels to eat the lionfish, and seem to be having some success. I definitely saw fewer of them around AKR than in the Bahamas, for example. There were many turtles, and some very interesting canyons and swim throughs, my favorite one being Spookie Channel, and of course, the well-known Mary’s Place. They offer 3 boat dives a day, and unlimited shore diving, but I did not take advantage of the shore diving during my trip, and I heard from other guests that it was somewhat lackluster. I did spend one day snorkeling under the dock where the dive boats are kept, and found quite a few interesting critters. AKR does offer two exceptional experiences at an extra cost: a shark dive and a dolphin dive. The shark dive was very well run and featured beautiful Caribbean Reef sharks that you were allowed to swim around with for 20 minutes or so before the feeding actually commenced. There were probably 10-15 sharks in attendance. The food is kept in a five gallon bucket that is opened by pulling on a rope, towards the end of the dive, so that the divers get a chance to swim with the sharks first, and so the sharks don’t get accustomed to actually being fed by divers—a good and safe arrangement in my opinion. The dolphin dive features dolphins that have been raised in the dolphin research center that is onsite at AKR, but occurs in open water. The dolphins are introduced to the divers in their fenced off lagoon and demonstrate a series of tricks and behaviors, including some amazing vocalizations, before being released into the open ocean for the 40 minute dive experience. This was a great experience, and I was able to get a few good shots of them swimming by, which, to me were much more interesting than watching them do tricks.Overall, this is a great destination for guests who want a nice resort, good food, and good value, and easy diving, and is also good for photographers, especially those wanting to shoot wide angle and see dolphins, turtles, and sharks. It might be more disappointing for those expecting a lot of macro subjects, or reefs teaming with large schools of fish, although the reefs themselves appeared to be in good condition for the most part. In my opinion, it was definitely money well-spent.
