Moalboal Dive Sites

Some of the top dive sites in Moalboal include:

  • Magic point - Depth runs from 5 to 55 metres/15 to 180 feet; visibility 15 to 25 metres/50 to 80 feet. Their fantastic house reef (a drop off) is just in front of their dive center and there are lots to see. Schools of jacks and tuna hunting on a prestige reef covered with hard, soft and fan corals. We also have our frogfish, a black, yellow and grey one. There are always turtles around and even while snorkeling you're bound to see them. We've even seen a whale shark and several white tip reef sharks on our house reef. During a night dive, you can see decorator crabs, cuttlefish, nudibranchs, snake eels, sea snakes and many more.
  • Interested in diving with sharks and other large marine animals? Check out diving in Tubbata Reef.
  • Discovery point - Depth: 5 to 30 metres/15 to 100 feet; visibility 10 to 25 metres/30 to 80 feet. This is a spot for macro lovers!
  • Tongo point - Depth: 5 to 55 metres/15 to 180 feet; visibility 15 to 25 metres/50 to 80 feet. This is everything a diver wants! A drop off covered with hard and soft corals, fan corals, small caves, occasional turtles and masses of small creatures like nudibranchs, leaf fish, harlequin ghost pipefish etc. But don’t be surprised if you see barracudas, jacks or a whale shark.
  • Interested in corals? Check out our list of the Best Coral Reefs in the World.
  • Goby Point - Depth: 5 to 10 metres/15 to 30 feet; visibility 10 to 15 meters/30 to 50 feet. Big rocks on a sandy bottom with masses of small lifelike boxer shrimps, signal gobbies, nudibranchs, pegasus and much more. The perfect afternoon dive!
  • Talisay Wall - Depth: 5 till 55 metres/15 till 180 feet, visibility 15 till 30 metres/50 till 100 feet. A variable dive with a slope and wall. There are several caves to be found and explored. Lots of black coral, batfish, barracuda, mandarin fish and sometimes a turtle. Because of the combination of slope and wall, this is also a great place for a night dive.
  • Talisay point - Depth: 5 till 55 metres/15 till 180 feet, visibility 15 till 30 meters/50 till 100 feet. A beautiful slope, full of hard corals mixed with soft and leather corals. You can find batfish, crocodile needlefish, turtles, sea snakes, frogfish, anemones with shrimps and clownfish to name but a few. In the evenings mandarin fish will come out in search of food.

Magic Island Dive Center Overview

Walk from the dive center straight into the water for a relaxing dive on their fabulous house reef by day or night. On your return, you can rinse your gear and take a shower. Afterwards, retire to the lounge to talk about what you saw and to look it up at one of the many marine life books. They have a well-equipped classroom for all the courses offered, but prefer teaching on one of their terraces. They have three traditional banka dive boats to take you to the dive sites, including Pescador Island. The boats were built locally especially for them at Magic Island.

I’d definitely go back! It’s about a 4-hour drive from Cebu.

They were super accommodating with my gluten and dairy allergies—tons of tasty options to choose from. A highlight of the trip was definitely the last night when they threw a party with a live band, dancing, and a traditional Filipino feast. So much fun! The staff learn your name by the first day, which makes you feel right at home.

Diving was good; the sheer walls were nice, and catching the sardine run was a real treat. The rooms were comfy, though if you’re like me and prefer to keep the air-conditioning on all the time, you’ll have to sacrifice some natural light since you can’t open the windows.

The dive boats are nice, but be prepared to step over a few sections to reach the seating. Backwards rolls off the boat are a breeze, and the guides are incredibly helpful. There’s a small ladder to climb back on, which is manageable. The house reef where they do the mandarin fish dives is lovely.

The dive center is spacious and well-organized, with short boat rides to the dive sites—never more than 20 minutes. You can do up to 5 dives a day, which is awesome if you’re a dive junkie like me.

They’re currently renovating, so I’m looking forward to seeing the finished rooms next time. Overall, a fantastic trip, and I’m definitely planning to go back soon!

Very much enjoyed my stay at this intimate resort. The staff and management were high points with fantastic, friendly service and beautiful grounds. The bungalows were tasteful with comfortable beds, nice balconies, and amenities, but could use better lighting at least for my old eyes. Dive center well managed with good procedures, could be a bit cramped if resort is full. Food was excellent and fresh; loved the fresh tuna steaks, big morning omelets, and fresh, crisp vegetables and fruit. Three boat dives and guided shore night dive offered. Mandarin fish, sardine ball dive, and Pescador Island were highlights. Unfortunately, due to severe, constant, unrelenting fishing pressure, there are few to no fish at all except for sardines and inedible puffers and scorpionfish; even Pescador Island has relatively few fish despite its being a "marine sanctuary" (along this coast these "sanctuaries" are too small and isolated to protect much at all.) I did see ghost pipefish, frog fish, and the gorgeous mandarinfish. Unfortunately, overall, I do not think Moalboal is a great location for diving.

I just cannot say enough great things about Magic Island Dive Resort. The staff is phenomenal from the waitresses and cooks to the housekeeping staff to the dive staff. They learned our names within a day of being there and addressed us by name. The waitresses knew our preferences within a day or two. The crew on the boats were attentive and the divemasters were helpful and awesome at finding critters. The accommodations are basic, but extremely clean. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Food is excellent and you have a choice of partaking of the family style meal on offer in the evening, or ordering from a menu. We will definitely return!
