Turquoise Bay Dive & Beach Resort

Turquoise Bay Resort is a very comfortable place. Rooms are beautiful and well maintained. The dining buffet offers a variety of local dishes for each meal and many tasty choices. The bar is well stocked. There is a nice pool and also a lovely beach. The resort sits above the water which seems to keep the bugs to a minimum. A nice breeze kept us comfortable throughout our five day stay. Wait staff and hotel employees were attentive and friendly.

Subway Watersports is the onsite dive operation. They have several boats to accommodate different sized groups. Boats are usually full and not camera friendly. A lot of business seems to be large groups or cruise ship visitors, so we didn't really fit anywhere. We are experienced divers who enjoy the walls and deeper sites. We spent more time over sand in about 40 feet of water! We did see eels and some nice big canyon swim throughs. The wreck dive was interesting.

Deep Blue Resort Utila

We spent two weeks here in April 2014. One of them was the special "Whale Shark Week" that costs a bit more for lectures by the researcher and more focus on getting in the water near the big fellas. Unfortunately, the interaction with the whale sharks was limited by their ability to dive deep whenever we got close! Many of the dive sites had few fish and poor visibility with lots of particulate in the water that I had not experienced in Utila before. Also, we only got to the deeper wall sites on the north side twice and the visibility there is usually better.
Deep Blue Resort is situated on the beach. Very pretty, but the bugs were awful. Nothing much seems to deter the nasty bites several of our group experienced. The rooms allow the breezes to blow through--nice; and the bugs to enter--not so good. The room layout is adequate, but not particularly comfortable. The maids appear to have a hard time keeping up with a full guest load. Missing towels, dirty floors and sinks at times. Food was plentiful, but repetitive and heavy on chicken dishes. The bar does not have much variety, but Shirley will get what you request if it's available. Shirley is a wonderful owner and made us feel very welcome. She is working very hard to keep this resort running.
The dive boat is well used and somewhat crowded. Lack of repairs led to one serious accident during our trip. The captain and crew did everything they could to make our dives enjoyable. But we spent a lot of time driving back and forth to the fuel dock and most of our dives were just off the front side of the resort or barely outside the harbor. We did see a couple sea horse, and the swim throughs at Airport Caves and Labyrinth are fun to explore. Dive staff was friendly and helpful but a little disorganized. It seemed that regular staff were missing during our stay and the overall operation suffered. Shore diving was possible, but required a long rocky entry.
This is a good place for your first exposure to whale sharks, but a bit expensive for the limited interaction available. It's a good place for dedicated divers who don't mind a bit of challenge for shore diving. Some of the guests put in four dives daily!

Scuba Club Cozumel

This is Joe's favorite dive vacation spot! We love the clean, friendly resort that caters to us as divers. The pictures on this site show it well. We love the many reefs offshore and the drift diving Cozumel is famous for. We go to SCC whenever we can because it is so much fun and very relaxing. Morning coffee is on the patio well before breakfast. And the clank, clank of tanks will wake you if your room is near the dive shop. The breakfast buffet has a big variety of Mexican specialties (I LOVE the chiliquillas!) as well as more traditional potatoes, bacon, french toast or eggs. There is fresh fruit, cereal and several juices every morning.

The dive boats leave after 0800, and the boat crews do everything they can to get you geared up and ready. The two tank schedule starts after an hours ride to Palancar, Santa Rosa and Columbia or one of the closer reefs like Punta Tunich or Paso Cedral. Then the second dive is closer after the surface interval of juice and water. Bring your own snacks if you need one between dives. Divemasters always find many interesting critters, big and small. We've seen reef sharks, eagle rays, juvenile drums and sea horses. I almost got tired of taking turtle pictures on our last trip! It's always a treat to see the Splendid Toads as well. The sea life seems much more plentiful this year perhaps because of the lion fish cull? We love the big pinnacles and swim throughs on the deeper wall sites. There are big colorful sponges and lots of fish. Water clarity during our trip was fantastic.

The lunch special is authentic Mexican, but you may order menu items like hamburgers or tacos. A small salad bar, chips, pico de gallo and a fruit plate are also part of the lunch spread. Drinks are extra but inexpensive. Special diets can be accommodated if you let them know about your needs. Dinner entrees are tasty and offer The Special, pasta, or vegetarian dishes. There's a choice of rolls, soup or salad, and dessert. Eat upstairs in the Fat Grouper and order your favorite drink for a great romantic evening. Of course, the cruise ship dock and town center with plenty of restaurant choices are only a mile away. Taxis are always available.

We like the clean rooms and amenities. WiFi works well. There's an in room safe for valuables. No TV or phones! But you can sit in the bar and watch Mexican television or CNN. They provide plenty of big fluffily towels and daily maid service. There is minimal turnover in staff so we feel like we know everyonel. Dive staff, waiters, and front desk speak good English. Tim Massimino, the owner, is always attentive to resort operation and guests. He has helped me obtain camera items not usually stocked at his store across the street. The dive store has almost everything you might need, however, as well as T-shirts and gift items.

The full service PADI dive operation has rental gear and can fix broken things. They offer PADI training and specialty courses for divers at all levels. A wreck dive or night dives are offered several times a week. I love the twilight dives. The first one begins before dark so you can see where you are going and watch the transition from day to night on the reef. Then the night dive shows off octos, lobster, eel, and crab. They do charge a daily reef fee to be paid in cash. And, you should bring a lock to store your gear.

We keep going back to SCC and inviting new friends to share the experience. They all love the opportunity to meet other divers and learn drift diving. I still love the ride over the reef and not knowing how fast it will be! Even non-divers can find enough to do. The Mayan ruins, many shops and great beaches aren't very far away. That's why we keep going back!

Bonaire Diving

The Bluewater description on this site is absolutely accurate. Bonaire is just amazing for scuba diving! Our most recent visit in April 2013 found calm seas and 80 plus visibility at all sites. It's the perfect place for beginning divers to gain experience while still entertaining more advanced divers with frogfish, sea horse and eagle rays as well as the usual Caribbean fish and inverts. We saw lots of turtles, barracuda, and one manta that made several shore passes near Buddy Dive and Kallis. The Hilma Hooker will interest wreck enthusiasts and Salt Pier is a fun night dive with lots of fish life around the towering structure. There's lots of wide angle or macro ops for underwater photographers and the topside salt works are a great surface interval. You will see the big white mounds and heavy equipment operation with acres of salt ponds. Not far away are the slave hut sites with the original quarters and colorful markers for more topside photos. I was also enthralled with the pink flamingos that populate the inland water ponds near the airport and at Slagbaai Park.

Bonaire has accommodations for everyone's preferences. You can choose an all inclusive dive resort and be pampered a bit; or, you can find delightful cottages a bit cheaper where you have facilities to prepare your own meals. There are lots of good restaurants around town and also markets for shopping. My sister got fresh catch from local fisherman for dinner! Most dive packages include a dive truck making it convenient to shop and shore dive anywhere you want. There's always an accessible site with good conditions. Unlimited fill stations are included at many of the resorts for shore diving.

Our favorite sites were Small Wall and Karpata, and anyplace on Klein Bonaire! Karpata is a bit deeper with a great old anchor embedded in the reef and can be reached from shore or boat. Small Wall had free swimming eels that we followed for great video pics. Klein has more variety and a bit more clarity than the main island, but requires a short boat trip. You can arrange any type of diving to fit your budget and interests. That's the best thing about scuba diving in Bonaire!
