Best Scuba Diving in Hawaii

Why dive in Hawaii? Warm water, awesome visibility, endemic fish (species found only in Hawaii), lava tubes, mantas, hammerheads, tiger sharks, Hawaiian Monk Seals, turtles, turtles, turtles, volcanoes (yes, you can dive one), beautiful lush scenery with waterfalls, pristine beaches, fantastic food, etc. Have I piqued your interest? I had to stop because the list is too long!
From my own experience, I have traveled to the islands of Hawaii (the “Big Island"), Maui, and Oahu. I have been diving in Kona (the Big Island), Maui, Molokini Crater, Molokai, Lanai.
On the Big Island, the diving is centered along the Kona coast. I found the diving we did was along sloping reefs with myriads of colorful fish. We usually started the dives deeper looking for specific, rare, fish and then shallowing up to complete the dives. We generally stayed pretty shallow to find most of the best sea life and dive through the lava tubes. This allowed us to make 90 minute dives the entire week. During our dives, we spotted a Hawaiian Monk seal (endangered and rare) and a tiger shark that had been hanging out in the area. Kona also has a world famous night manta dive. It's an opportunity to see perhaps a dozen or so mantas up close and personal.
On Maui, there’s a chance to dive several nearby islands. Just off shore from Maui is Molokini Crater, a crescent-shaped, partially submerged, volcanic crater that juts vertically 161 feet out of the ocean. Diving can be done either inside the crater or on the outside of the crater wall. It seems that snorkelers mostly do the inside. We dove the back wall. Really nice vertical wall diving with lots of fish and turtles.
Dive boats leaving from Lahaina Harbor on Maui are able to cross the Pailolo Channel and take you to an area just off the coast of Molokai which is famous for Hammerhead sharks. This trip is for advanced divers with iron stomachs. The crossing can be very rough due to strong wind and waves. The diving is all drift diving from a live boat in choppy, mostly blue water. “No problem” you say? Great! Because it’s all worth it. We saw schooling Hammerheads swimming below us on both dives!
Boats from Lahaina can also take you to Lanai for diving. We did a 3 tank trip, all drift diving, off the far side of the island. Beautiful diving in an area that doesn’t have a lot of pressure from divers. After the diving, the weather was so good and the sea like glass, the crew gave us a boat tour around parts of the island that are rarely seen by small boats because of bad conditions.
I could go on about diving, but you can see how diverse the dives can be.
Top side activities are just as diverse as below. You can visit volcanoes, pristine beaches, world-class restaurants, hike to waterfalls, and do any watersports you want. This is definitely a destination for the entire family. All levels of divers will be thrilled by the diving and non-divers will have plenty to keep them busy. Before you leave be sure to try popular local foods like poke, shave ice, SPAM musubi and loco moco. You'll love Hawaii above and below.

St. Croix - US Virgin Islands

St. Croix is my favorite of the 3 U.S. Virgin Islands; for the diving, the people, the food, and the laid-back vibe of the island in general.

Diving in St. Croix mostly takes place along the wall, which stretches the length of the north side of the island. It's on the edge of the Puerto Rico Trench, which drops off to around 13,000 feet. Many of the wall dives here are nearly vertical. There's abundant marine life, including morays, rays, crustaceans, turtles, sharks, plenty of reef fish, and much more. The times I have dived here, current was almost nonexistent, making both boat and shore diving easy and pleasurable. Another great dive that shouldn't be missed is the Frederiksted pier. If you have a rental car, it's an easy, leisurely trip across the island. If you don't have a car, any of the dive shops in Christiansted will arrange a trip. While diving the pier, we saw several seahorses, a few octopuses, a baitball, and a lot more. It was an excellent, out-of-the-ordinary dive. Please make the effort to do this one.

The people here are warm and welcoming. That includes the local island people and ex-pats as well. If you're on the island during "Jump Up", be sure to take in the festivities. Jump Up on St. Croix is a party in the streets of Christiansted. It has become one of St. Croix’s favorite social events among locals and visitors alike. Music, dancing, food, drinks, street vendors, cultural dancers, shopping, steel pans, fire dancers, as well as the iconic Mocko Jumbies all come together and Christiansted comes alive. Another bonus is that English is the official language, no passport required, and the official currency is the US dollar!

There are a lot of restaurants on St. Croix, including everything from fine dining to small local Island food places. Be sure to try some of the local dishes. My three favorites are Conch, Roti, and Rum Cake. You can also bring rum cake home from many shops and the airport as well.

In St. Croix, life seems to move in semi-slow motion. It's much slower than busy St. Thomas, and not filled with condos owned by the rich and famous, like St. John.

As you can see, I'm a big fan of St. Croix. I'll continue to return for the wonderful island experiences. If you like jewelry, check out the famous St. Croix hook bracelets. You'll fall in love the first time you visit this island paradise.

Paradise Taveuni Fiji

I traveled to Fiji in October. The first week of my trip was spent at Paradise Taveuni. The owners, Terri and Alan, are wonderful hosts. They endeavor to meet every need of their guests. They live across the road from the resort and take a hands-on approach to everyday operation. Alan dove with us every day and Teri sees the onsite operation. They have an on-site farm to supply the kitchen with fresh produce. We had a meal plan that provided three meals daily, with everything being prepared to order. The menus differed each day with specials available for both lunch and dinner. We found the food to be delicious and abundant.

The staff is beyond wonderful. You are always greeted with a big smile and an enthusiastic “bula”. Fijians are the friendliest people on the face of the earth and it shows at Paradise Taveuni. Our bure had an ocean view, with a king-size bed, air conditioning, large bathroom, outdoor stone shower, mini-refrigerator, and coffeemaker. The grounds are well kept and there is a beautiful pool. Tables are set around the grounds to sit and eat or gaze at the ocean. The great room has wifi and a comfortable lounge area.

The diving was almost exclusively at the rainbow reef, where the dive sites were exceptional! The dive staff was very attentive and dedicated to safety. They tend to your gear at the end of the day by taking it off the boat, rinsing, and drying. We happened to be there on Fiji Day (independence day) and we joined in the giant celebration with the other guests and all the staff. The resort staff also arranged day excursions for us on non-diving days to nearby villages, waterfalls, natural waterslide, international dateline, and the historic church. We loved this resort and would definitely return.

Palau Pacific Resort

I chose to stay at the Palau Pacific Resort after reading some reviews and getting recommendations from other divers. I'm glad I did! This is a beautiful property with lush grounds that include tropical plants and a saltwater pond filled with reef fish and rays. The garden view room I stayed in, looked out onto the pond. My room had a king size bed, a/c, flat-screen TV, and free wifi. There was also a small patio right outside. It was kept immaculate by housekeeping and was a comfortable home away from home during my stay.

When I wasn't scuba diving, I spent a lot of time in the gorgeous infinity pool, on the beautiful white sand beach, on the resort’s hiking trail, or at their awesome bar. Every staff member was gracious and friendly. They tried their best to accommodate my every wish. The resort also has a spa, gym, tennis courts, and a gift shop. I ate at the buffet breakfast every morning. It is a very extensive assortment of eastern and western foods. The quality was extraordinary. Room service is also offered. I ate lunches provided by my off-site dive operator and dinners at several different restaurants within a short distance of the resort. Splash Palau is the on-site dive operator featuring a dive center, dive trips, and rental gear. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would definitely stay here again.

Atlantis Dive Resort, Puerto Galera

I traveled to the Philippines in April of 2022, shortly after the country was reopened to tourists. I wanted to dive in Puerto Galera again, and chose the Atlantis Resort as my temporary home-away-from-home. In the past, I had taken a bus from Manila to Batangas on the coast, then a ferry to Puerto Galera. Because the bus & ferry schedules were so erratic, I requested the resort arrange my transfers. This consisted of a private driver in an air-conditioned van, 1st class ferry ticket, and tuktuk ride to the resort. Everything went like clockwork. The resort is set on a hillside, carved out of the jungle, at the ocean’s edge. I was on an all-inclusive plan with accommodations, diving, and food included.

Everything at this resort is top notch. The rooms are large and spacious with bathroom and shower. All have A/C and ceiling fan, as well as a mini bar that can be used a a refrigerator. My room had plenty of outlets for easy charging of electronics.

There is a large restaurant with an extensive menu and the chefs prepare about 6 specials each day. The food was excellent and the portions were large. The meal plan includes 3 courses at dinner and I found it hard to finish all 3. I never had a complaint with the food or the service.

The dive shop, locker room, tank storage, and dive-prep area are all at water-side. The dive crew will set up your gear and take it to and from the boat. They take a maximum of 6 divers per boat, and we were diving most times with 5 and a couple of times with only 4 divers. Because the dive sites are such a short ride, your dive briefing is at the resort, you suit up, board the boat, and go diving. The boat returns to the resort after every dive where the resort staff is waiting with hot soup, coffee, tea, beverages, snacks, and sweets. If you're diving nitrox, you select a pre-filled tank, analyze and check pressure yourself, mark tank with tape, and the crew will do the rest. After a short surface interval, it all happens again. They offer 4 dives per day plus a night dive. The local reefs are covered with beautiful hard and soft corals. Nudibranchs are everywhere you look, sometimes several different species on one rock. You can also expect to see octopuses, mantis shrimp, lots of crustaceans, and the typical reef fish found in the Coral Triangle. Puerto Galera is a photographer’s dream. The dive guides are very experienced at finding the best critters. The dives are generally no more than 50 feet, so 60 minute dives are normal.

Atlantis also does a day trip to Verde Island. This is an all day trip including 3 dives. The dives at Verde Island tend to be deeper, with more current, hence, more pelagics. This is vertical wall diving at it's best. There is a famous “Washing Machine" dive here as well.

The service from the staff at the resort is impeccable. Starting at check-in, every staff member greeted me and addressed me by name each time they saw me. Everyone has a wide, genuine smile. The staff would rate 5 stars anyway, but after 5 days of diving and making a total of 19 dives, I contracted covid-19. I was required to quarantine in my room until I tested negative, before returning home. The staff really upped their game and attended to my every need. Food and all other necessities were delivered to my room several times each day. Ten stars are not enough for the friendly and attentive staff here.
My return transfers, again arranged by the Resort, went flawlessly.

The only small negative about this resort is they have no elevator. If your room is on the upper levels, you may have to navigate a lot of stairs up and down each time you go to or from your room. I was on one of the upper levels, but the stairs were not an issue for me.
I would definitely return to Atlantis Puerto Galera and have recommended it to friends.

Dive Cabo - Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

I used Dive Cabo for diving around the Cabo San Lucas area. The dive shop is located at the marina, and it’s a short walk to the dive boat. They have a large array of rental gear and offer instruction. There's a changing area in the shop and a hot water shower as well!
We dove in an area where there are an abundance of sea lions, a site at Lands End where you can dive in the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez on the same dive, and a spot that has an underwater sand fall, like a waterfall on land. The diving was relatively shallow and easy, with little current.
The dive guides were very professional and a videographer follows you throughout the dive to provide each diver with a free video at the end of the day. When I return to Cabo, I'll definitely use Dive Cabo again.

Waidroka Bay Resort

I traveled to Fiji in October. The second week of my trip was spent at Waidroka Bay. This is somewhat of a rustic resort, perfect for divers and surfers. We had an ocean view bure with king-size bed, air conditioning, large bathroom, and mini-refrigerator. The staff is super friendly and they greet you with a big smile and an enthusiastic “bula” each time they see you. We had a meal plan which provided 3 meals per day. Breakfast and lunch were prepared to order and dinner was a fixed menu. The food was very good and plentiful.

We had a Fijian lovo night complete with a kava ceremony presented by resort staff, who all joined in. The festivities went late into the evening. The resort celebrated Fiji Day a few days late due to their party supplies and special t-shirt’s being delayed. Lucky for us, we were able to celebrate the holiday twice in just a few days.

The dive center is modern and well-stocked with rental gear. The dive boat was very comfortable and took us to the dive sites with ease. The dive staff was very experienced and knowledgeable. The diving was at both Beqa Lagoon and the local reefs. I found the diving on the local reefs to be just as enjoyable as the Beqa reefs. The world-famous shark dive is incredible and a must for any diver visiting this area. Favorite dive spot: Frigates Wall. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Highly recommended.

Palau

After a week of diving in the Philippines, I was able to take a non-stop flight directly from Manila to Palau for another week of spectacular diving. Palau is everything you may have heard about, and more. For scuba divers, Palau has just about everything you might be interested in: sheer walls, colorful reefs, drift diving, wrecks, caves and blue holes, big animals, macro life during blackwater diving, and jellyfish lake.

There are so many different dive experiences, it's hard to choose a favorite. A few of the best wall dives are Peleliu Wall, New Drop Off, and Big Drop Off. These are full of life, including giant sea fans and pelagics are often seen. German Channel is considered one of the world’s best drift dives where mantas are frequently spotted. Peleliu Express is another exciting drift dive. There are many wrecks to explore including the Helmet Wreck and the Zeke fighter plane and other World War ll wrecks. There are several blue holes at the surface that lead to a large cavern with an exit onto the wall. Chandelier Cave is an easy dive where you are able to see stalactites and stalagmites and surface in air pockets inside the cave.

Some of the big animals that can be seen while diving in Palau are: several species of sharks, mantas, dugongs, Napoleon wrasse, and giant clams. For macro diving, black water night dives are offered, where macro creatures are the main attraction. Jellyfish Lake is a unique snorkel dive where you share the water with thousands of non-stinging jellyfish. It was closed in 2017 due to a drastic population decline, but was reopened in 2019. Palau’s signature dive, and one that appears on every list of the world's best dives, is Blue Corner. There is a very strong current here, requiring a Reef hook, where you hook in and watch the parade of large numbers of Gray Reef Sharks and White Tip Reef Sharks. This is a must-dive site for experienced divers. On the boat rides to many of the dive locations, you will weave your way through the Rock Islands, a beautiful trip among mushroom-shaped limestone outcroppings. There are many dive operators to choose from that dive all the best spots.

There are plenty of things to do when not diving. World War ll history in on display during a land tour of Peleliu, where there are still many relics left on the island after one of the fiercest battles of the war. Palau has a rich culture, which can be explored at the local cultural center. A wonderful souvenir is a storyboard, which is a hand-carved wood plank that tells the story of one of many legends unique to Palau. Some of the local islanders also chew betel nut, which gives them an energy boost. It turns their teeth red after chewing. Everyone here is super friendly and warmly welcomes visitors.

There are lots of resorts and hotels to choose from and many restaurants, some of which serve a local favorite, fruit bat soup, prepared using a whole bat which is served in the soup. It can be washed down with one of the local beers, Red Rooster.

Bottom line: Palau is a destination with world class diving, a rich culture, restaurants offering many different cuisines, and a warm and friendly population. Add Palau to your bucket list, you won't regret it.

Belmar Oceanfront Apartments Bonaire

I have been to Bonaire several times, but recently stayed at the Belmar Oceanfront Apartments for the first time. I chose it because their on-site valet boat diving service was just what I was looking for. Shore diving was not an option for me this trip. This is a small resort with a mix of 21 one, two, and three bedroom apartments. The on-site dive shop and dive boat are operated by Buddy Dive Bonaire. Everything in the resort guide is described perfectly.
We had a 1 bedroom that was extremely spacious, with a full, well equipped kitchen and bathroom. Our balcony overlooked the gorgeous saltwater pool and had a 180 degree ocean view (see photo). The living room is large and comfortable with a flat screen TV.
The dive boat picks up at the dock right in front of the resort. It is configured for a maximum of 8 divers. Some days we were diving with only 6. Dive gear is stored in a locker room just behind the dive shop. Even though “valet service" is provided, it is still each diver's responsibility to bring gear to the boat and back, and rinse and hang to dry. The crew will load gear onto the boat, set up on your tank, assist in analyzing your tank if using nitrox, switch tanks after first dive, and unload gear from the boat on arrival back at the dock. The dive guides were very knowledgeable and did a great job at finding frogfish for us. Five out of six days, we dove Klein Bonaire, only accessible by boat. This is great for people wanting to make afternoon shore dives on Bonaire. No need to worry about repeating dive sites. One day, we dove sites on Bonaire due to winds at Klein causing chop, but these sites are just as good.
The resort doesn't have a restaurant. Our package included a rental car, so it was very easy to drive to one of the many great restaurants available on the island. The car also came in handy to drive around the island for sightseeing.
We will definitely return to the Belmar Oceanfront Apartments for the laid back, easy atmosphere and the great boat diving. We visited a couple of other resorts to eat, and realized how busy they were with dive groups and other visitors. So glad we chose Belmar! Highly recommended.

Asia Divers - Puerto Galera, Philippines

Asia Divers is the on-site dive operator at the El Galleon Beach Hotel in Puerto Galera. They offer 4 dives each day and some night dives. The dive sites are close enough to return to the resort after each dive. Most are fairly shallow and easily diveable, but we did experience some current. The crew and divemasters were awesome. Safety is a top priority. They offer training and have a good supply of rental equipment. They also have a nice gift shop. I would return again. Highly recommended.
