Compass Point Dive Resort

Compass Point is the resort of choice if you want to try diving at Grand Cayman's East End. Which you should, because the diving is really excellent, and far less crowded than other areas! Accommodations are in spacious, comfortable suites with kitchens, a dining area, bedroom, and nice bathrooms. Nearby markets make it easy to buy breakfast and lunch groceries, even dinner, if you are so inclined. That saves some $$$. Eagle Rays restaurant is on premises, and offers three meals a day that are good, but a la carte, paid separately. The staff are friendly and happily fix any problems with the room quickly.

East End diving is really good. There are wall dives, coral gardens, a special spot for macro photography, and shipwrecks. Some dive sites are thick with fish life, and sharks are seen from time to time, along with eagle rays. The dive boats are comfortable, clean, and well set up. The dive shop is well stocked and staffed by helpful people. It's become my favorite place on Grand Cayman!

Horizon Charters

The Horizon is the best liveaboard for the area of the Southern Channel Islands. It frequents San Clemente, Catalina and Santa Barbara islands, Cortez Bank, Tanner Bank, and occasionally visits Isla San Martin and the San Benitos islands off Baja. The boat is clean and well-maintained. The two captains are excellent, and the crew is experienced, friendly and helpful. There is a serious emphasis on safety, including a required briefing prior to departing the dock. Nitrox is available from a membrane system. The cabins are comfortable, as are the bunks, and all have full linen service. The food is pretty good and plentiful.

The only negative is that recently it has prioritized Guadalupe shark cage diving, and fewer trips are available to the Channel Islands each year. But if you get on a trip, the diving is consistently amazing. Highly recommended!

We were on the Arenui for a 10 day trip in Komodo. It's a beautiful boat, tastefully appointed, roomy cabins, good A/C, and a fantastically friendly and helpful crew. Our dive guide was terrific. The food was plentiful, varied, and very good.

The diving operations out of an inflatable were very smooth. Nitrox is available. The diving at Komodo was very interesting. We saw some sharks, a number of mantas, and all kinds of fish life. One dive group saw a dugong! We had a walking tour on Rinca island to see the Komodo Dragons, but I was a bit disappointed we did not get to do the beach walk where there are many of them and they are more active.

This is a top of a class liveaboard, and we plan to return. Very highly recommended!

Carpe Vita

We've been to the Maldives several times. This is the nicest boat we've been on. The Dhoni was also fabulous. Rooms are very spacious, great bathrooms, good lighting if you want to read, everything clean as a whistle. The food was plentiful and very good. It could have had a bit more variety though.

Diving off the Dhoni was a pleasure. All the gear stayed there, except for our cameras. Good camera rinse, and lots of workspace on the stern of the Carpe Vita.

There had been some recent bleaching, so the fish life was a bit down, and the corals weren't as healthy as usual. We still saw plenty of sharks and lots of mantas. When we next go to the Maldives, we will certainly book onto the Carpe Vita!

Crystal Blue Resort

Crystal Blue Resort is perhaps the best place anywhere for amazing macro photography. The inimitable Mike Bartick not only manages the resort but also offers amazing advice and help with every guest's photography. He is at the cutting edge of macro and blackwater photography, and the resort, located in Anilao, the Philippines, is rich in subjects. The diving operation is very well organized, the guides are excellent, and the camera room is amazing. Every detail has been thought out.

The resort offers nice rooms, well air-conditioned and clean. The food is very good and healthy. It could use more variety, but overall it is fine. The facility is set up against a rather steep hill, and the steps up to the rooms can be a bit tricky, so care must be taken. It's a pretty easy trip, non-stop from LAX to Manila, overnight in an airport hotel, and a 3 hour drive to the resort the following morning.

It's a great place, and I hope to return soon!
