Itinerary Overview

Mobulas & Orcas (Spotter Airplane Supported) - 8 Days, 7 Nights.

Engage with whales and mobulas. The prominent creature of interest is the orca, also known as the killer whale. Over 80 years of combined experience in the field has allowed for respectful interactions with these magnificent creatures, ranging from the cold waters of Alaska to more southerly locations like Roca Partida and Socorro Island. Witnessing the sleek black dorsal fins of orcas slicing through the water during their appearances is an unforgettable sight, always in adherence to Mexico's laws.

A valuable asset in this endeavor is 'Scout,' a dedicated spotter aircraft operated by a pilot and biologist-observer. From January to November, Scout conducts aerial patrols, verifying sightings in undisclosed areas that extensive experience has revealed as prime locations for remarkable encounters with these creatures.

Interactions are consistently conducted with the utmost respect and consideration for the animals' preferences. Participants can anticipate being in the water with rays, passing whale sharks, dolphins, inquisitive and interactive orcas, and possibly finback whales.

  • Fly into SJD. Cabo. Sailing catamaran leaves from La Paz.
  • Day 1
  • Complimentary photo and video workshop at SeeCreatures Cabo San Lucas. Either 5 pm meet and board in Cabo or mid-afternoon transfer to La Paz.
  • Days 2 – 7
  • We usually start off at our favourite hotspot for masses of mobula rays leaping for joy first thing in the morning because, well, it’s really fun! And then we will weigh anchor and make our way. During your week onboard, we hope to get you in the water with mega pods of bottlenose dolphins. If we are lucky, we might spot spinner and Risso’s dolphins, known for their well-deserved reputation for amazing aerobatics. We will also encounter California sea lions, mobula rays, and hopefully cow-nose rays.
  • Big animals should be in the area, and our naturalist will be in touch with our network of friends and colleagues, exchanging notes. Scout, our spotter aircraft, will take to the air as often as possible, subject to wind and weather conditions. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for interactions with whale sharks. We will be actively searching for sperm whales, fin whales, and sometimes even minkes and pseudo orcas.
  • The highlight of any trip is if we spot the black fins of orcas slicing through the water. All interactions are conducted in compliance with the laws and regulations of Mexico. For our diving friends, bring your dive gear, and we will be sure to get you some splashes on local dive sites.
  • On several evenings, we will anchor in our best spots for in-water night interactions with the mobulas. Otherwise, enjoy the sunset, cocktail hour, dinner, and an evening presentation. Important note that strategic use of our accompanying fast boat will ensure the best sightings and interactions, but this may involve spending some time in the smaller boat cruising around in search of marine creatures.
  • Day 8
  • Breakfast and disembarkation around 8:30 am. Complimentary coach transfer back to SJD if you are in La Paz.

Mexico Sardine Run (Magdalena Bay) - 6 Days, 5 Nights.

From October to January, witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of striped marlin gathering for the world's second-largest sardine run in Magdalena Bay. This underwater extravaganza also offers glimpses of California sea lions, dolphins, wahoo, pelicans, and various bird species. Magdalena Bay's natural beauty, including mangroves and massive sand dunes, is a draw in itself. We collaborate with experienced local panga drivers, like Captain G, who transitioned from fishing to eco-tourism.

  • Day 1
  • We'll meet at SeeCreatures Cabo at 9:30 a.m. Enjoy a scenic 5-hour ground transfer to San Carlos (Mag Bay) with a lunch stop along the way. In the late afternoon, you'll board your yacht for a cocktail hour, sunset, and dinner.
  • Days 2 – 5
  • Embark on four days of adventure, guided by local fishermen turned eco-tourism experts who know the waters intimately. They transitioned from fishing to support tourism, creating an ideal partnership. You can choose to spend time out on the pangas or relax onboard in our tranquil anchorage inside the bay entrance. The option for scuba and freediving at local wrecks and dive sites is available and included with your trip.
  • Day 6
  • We'll disembark from San Carlos at 8:30 a.m. and return with a 5-hour transfer to Cabo or San Jose del Cabo.
