Dive Overview

The Indonesian archipelago is a true remote paradise packed with 5-star dive sites to match our 5-star liveaboard and crew. Indonesia offers everything from healthy coral reefs to giant mantas and sandy critter hide-outs, with so much to see that one trip is never enough. Duyung Baru's owner has been operating in the Komodo park for 20 years, so he draws upon a wealth of knowledge to always try and ensure that his divers go to uncrowded dive sites as well as relatively unknown secret locations around the park.

Diving Komodo

The Komodo National Park is made up of the Komodo Island as well as many small and medium-sized islands including Rinja, Padar, Tatawa, and Sabayor. The water surrounding these islands abounds with marine life, make it ideal for diving. Strong currents surge between the islands on a daily basis. These currents bring with them the rich nutrients vital to this thriving marine ecosystem.

These currents can make diving “tricky” but for more experienced divers, exciting and great fun. There are dive sites suitable for all levels of diver, from experienced open water diver and above. However, there is no doubt that the largest shoals, the biggest fish, the most sharks and generally the most exhilarating dives are where the currents are at the strongest.

Many of the dive sites such as Castle Rock, Crystal Boomi, Batu Bolong, the Cauldron, and the passage are truly “world class” dives, when dived under the right conditions. Other sites rate as excellent diving.

During our dives, we have encountered amazing marine life, large amounts of white tip reef sharks and grey reef sharks. Large shoals of jacks, snapper, surgeonfish, giant trevally and fusiliers. Large groupers can be seen on most dives and we have lately been encountering some of the biggest Napolean wrasses in years. Diving with manta rays within the Komodo National Park is a common occurrence as well as turtles and eagle rays.

The corals here are spectacular and the reefs in many cases can be considered “pristine”. Completely alive with all the usual reef-dwelling creatures. Some sites offer excellent “macro” life, with the possibility of seeing seahorses, frogfish, scorpion leaf fish and a large variety of nudibranchs.

From April to November the surface water conditions are best and on many days, flat and completely calm. Visibility is great, anything from 15 – 40 meters. Water temperature varies from 27 – 31 degrees C, depending on the tide. In October and November, Duyung Baru offers special MACRO CRUISES to the south (Nusa Kode). Here, the water Temperature could be less than 24 degrees ( 5 mm Wetsuit ). For all other cruises, a 3mm wet-suit is enough.

For maximum comfort in the water, we would suggest that you wear a quality 3mm thick wetsuit. Wetsuit boots and open heeled fins are also preferable. We would also recommend you bring a reef hook, D.S.M.B., whistle, torch, and all the usual extra accessories for diving in remote locations.

All of the dives will be guided by the knowledgeable, experienced and enthusiastic PADI Dive-instructor, ably assisted by his boatman and Komodo currents “guru”, Merajap, who has been navigating these waters since he was a child. He seems to be able to read the oceans like a book.

The diving takes place from a 6-meter long aluminum boat powered by a 40 hp outboard, the tender is equipped with a VHF radio communication system and all the recommended safety equipment. The speedboat journey times from the Duyung out to the dive sites take between 10 – 20 minutes. Whilst the divers are out diving, the Duyung anchors up in a calm secluded bay, so non-divers can relax in a peaceful and tranquil environment. Up to 3 guided dives per day are offered and with conditions permitting, a self-guided night dive can be taken.

Sample 7-Day Itinerary

  • Day 1
  • The Captain of Duyung Baru (Mrs. Yani Korth) will await your arrival at the Airport/Labuan Bajo to assist with your baggage and accompany you onboard The Duyung Baru.
  • Onboard you will be introduced to the crew and given an orientation of the boat and be briefed about safe diving practices in the Komodo National Park sites. Around 11.30 am we will sail from Labuan Bajo to our first dive site at Sebayor Island.
  • At Saboayor Island, you can sample the scenery and enjoy a relaxing check-up dive to get your feet wet and to familiarize yourself with your equipment and make necessary adjustments to it. You can also conduct a buoyancy check to make sure that you have sufficient weight in this new diving environment. At the end of the dive, you will be in a controlled environment in which you can demonstrate your ability to deploy your surface marker buoy (SMB) in the event that this is necessary on subsequent dives in the marine park.
  • Night diving options are also available on the first day. Max depth 18 meters
  • Day 2
  • We will continue to cruise to the center of Komodo, also known as "current city" with visits to other dive sites on the eastern side of Komodo Island. Dive sites like Batu Bolong, Tatawa Besar, Tatawa Kecil, and Siaba. Max depth 30 meters. It will depend on the local wind and ocean conditions at the time and the strength of the current.
  • Day 3
  • Karang Makassar, this dive site also known as Manta Point due to the large schools of Manta Rays it attracts. Here you can observe the elegant creatures as they swoop and glide in their natural element. Max depth 15 meters.
  • From our private mooring in a calm and peaceful Lagoon, we will have easy access to the many dive sites located nearby. You will also have the possibility to revisit the Batu Bolong which you will have dived already on day two.
  • The Batu Bolong, one of Komodo Island's most renowned dive sites. The site is home to a thriving coral reef where you can see a diverse array of marine species, including Sharks, Napoleon wrasse, and Manta rays.
  • Day 4
  • We will sail to the northern tip of Komodo and set anchor at the twin islands of Gili Lawa Laut and Gili Lawa Darat. Here you can explore some of Komodo's most stunning and picturesque reefs, including such famous dive sites as Castle Rock, Lighthouse, Cauldron, Crystal Rock and Golden Passage -- each with an abundance of colorful and energetic sea life. Max Depth 30 meters.
  • The final dive site location will depend on local conditions at the time and will be at the discretion of the dive instructor and captain.
  • Day 5
  • Dive site Golden Passage is the longest drift dive in Komodo stretching 1km from east to west. Max depth 18 meters. You can expect extreme current here throughout the dive and you can see Black Tips Reef Sharks, Bumphead Parrot Fish. Towards the end of the drift, you will arrive in a shallow bay which is more sheltered from the current and an ideal place for our safety stop.
  • Dive site Cauldron, some people call it also The Sling-Shot or Fish-Bowl Max depth 21 meters
  • Dive site Castle Rock is an advanced dive site subject to extremely strong currents at most times. A negative entry is required here to a depth of about 20+meters. You can see many Giant Trevallies and sharks and copious amounts of diverse marine species here. Max depth 30-35meters
  • Towards sunset, you will enjoy a trek across the rugged hillside of Gili Lawa Darat where you can enjoy the stunning views of the multitude of islands clustered around Komodo.
  • Day 6
  • Police Corner Siaba. We will moor here for the night as there is another Manta cleaning station nearby for those of you who just can't get enough of these beautiful creatures. Alternatively, Tatawa Kecil is another option should you be looking for non-manta diving for your final diving experience here in Komodo.
  • Day 7
  • Early in the morning, we will visit the Ranger station in Rinja Island to see the famous Komodo Dragons. It will be a short trek with another beautiful viewpoint over the Komodo national park. After this amazing experience, you will be served breakfast and afterward personally escorted to the Komodo International airport by Yani the Duyung Baru’s captain.

9-Day North Komodo Itinerary

Should 7 days not be sufficient for your diving needs then Duyung Baru can also create a custom made 9-day itinerary for you. There are several options for the extensions here depending on your diving experience and interests. Should you be a regular Advanced open water diver then we can bring you to some different sites that are in the same general area but just not so well know as the big names like the Batu Bolong. Should you have fallen in love with the Manta Rays, Sharks and Giant trevallies (as is normal) then it is also possible to simply revisit some of your personal favorite sites on these days.

9-Day Komodo Itinerary Including Nusa Kode

Should you wish to extend for a longer trip then we can offer you an alternate 9-day itinerary to include an extension to the far south of Komodo to Nusa Kode (only available from March to April and October to December so you can experience the optimum diving conditions).

When we arrive in Nusa Kode to a sheltered horseshoe-shaped bay, we will moor here for 2 nights. You can dive such sites as Secret Pinnacle Cannibal Rock, Yellow Wall, Boulders, Torpedo Point, Crinoid Canyon, and several other unnamed walls. There is huge marine diversity in the sites here and they are all a macro lovers dream. If you are a Macro photographer with an SLR camera then this is the perfect place for you. If you are more interested in regular fun diving then the 7-day trip or a 9 day north trip will be of more appropriate. The max depths are anywhere between 12 and 30 meters depending on the sites and water temperature. During these ideal months is a far more agreeable 28 degrees. The visibility is always better at this time also, sometimes up to 30 meters. (July August has about 5 meters visibility and water temperature is 21 or colder).
